Re: General January Weather
From our offices in town we have a great view west and north west toward the mountains. Look to be some decent downpours NW of Chch, some big Cb over that direction. Still fine here in town though.

You should get one of those big green lasers and point it up @ the clouds, I might be able to see that

Heard there was a thunderstorm in Timaru with a bit of hail, going to go for a drive those ways soon and see if much is hapening with it.

Am now working in the tower so have a 360deg view... there's a largish front to the south building over what I'd guess is Darfield.. growing quickly... to the SW across Alps it's looking dark, wind is snow S/SW and cooling fast. Even to my North the skies are looking v. unstable...

Wigram used to use my office (the tower) as a landmark for trainee pilots - they'd fly to it then turn back

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
Brief bursts of rain and melted hail coming through now, looks as if we are on the edge of a storm further inland.

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
I heard some thunder that was of a higher pitch. It sounded quite odd. I wonder why it did that? It sure look angry over towards the mountains anyway.

Activity looks to be relatively weak and haphazard from my viewpoint in Riccarton. The forecast of Scattered showers seems on the nail

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
Ohhh lots of rumbling now - long grumblers
TBH looks like it might be short-lived as blue skies immediately following current front to south - S/SW inland over Alps looking far more nasty.

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
Just came back from town (after having a tooth pulled out)
multiple lightning strikes from about west melton to kirwee, averaging about 1 every 1-2 minutes. Seems to be currently most intense over Kirwee/Courtenay, bolts about every minute or so.
Some heavy rain with very very small hail mixed in.
First picture is looking north east, second is looking towards darfield (as I typed this, a massive flash just provided some nice light into my room)

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
Hey, that blue sky to south seems to have disappeared and now almost as dark as TS corner! Several strikes East of here (between here and Chch) that I've seen so far... still not quite got to us here in Waddington but what's coming looks like fun!!
