Weather Forum History
I have been looking into the history of this forum (the archives back to 2003)
Apparently there was another forum b4 this 1?
Who operated it? Who was on the previous 1 b4 this 1?
Is there a archive of the previous forum that used to exist, mainly because of the weather events that happened around early 2000?

Oh Cool,
A shame it had to be deleted, i would have liked to have a look at the events.
From my understanding Steven set this 1 up first and then Foggy took over? Correct?

Re: Weather Forum History
Michael, was there any significant event in 2000 from the similiar pattern now? I remember in Jan 2000 we had a very hot humid summer... from memory if I can recall on a day in Jan of that year 2000 it reached 30+ in the shade in Kaitaia, it was the talk on the local radio station.Michael wrote:Talking about 2000 it was a similar pattern to now.
Later on that year Kaitaia had the most amazing hailstone storm - it looked like the street's of Kaitaia were covered in snow, just like the Papamoa event of last year ( I am certain it was that year!!! ) it was unbelieveable - will re-check to confirm it was 2000 and will get back.

Wow, that is neat to read... so, when you think about it... Steven, Foggy and you really would have been those first NZ early pioneer's in developing and setting up a New Zealand weather related type forum online, on the internet, that has grown and developed over the years - that's pretty neat - Awesome!!!

Re: Weather Forum History
Think that was more likely to have been Feb 20, 2001, when a couple of 'official' stations recorded 30.2C (29.3C at Kaitaia Aero). The summer of 1999/2000 was relatively cooler up there.DT-NZ wrote:I remember in Jan 2000 we had a very hot humid summer... from memory if I can recall on a day in Jan of that year 2000 it reached 30+ in the shade in Kaitaia, it was the talk on the local radio station.
Interestingly, Kaitaia Observatory recorded 30.4C on Feb 7 last year, although other stations were just over 29C. Kaitaia very rarely gets above 30.0C, with the highest ever temp of 30.5C recorded at Kaitaia Aero on Jan 28, 1960 since records began in 1948.

Re: Weather Forum History
Before the weather forums there was the Aussie weather mailing list. The only NZ'ers on there from memory was John Gaul and myself. The mailing list ended in 2001 when weatherzone opened a forum. And I believe Brians NZ forum started in 2002. I always thought it was a particular individual that bought the demise of the original NZ forum. We are not allowed to mention his name or his forecasting methods, but he turned into a big argument LOL.

It is great to learn and know who the early NZ weather enthusiast pioneer's of the internet are that collectively and actively got NZ weather online for this country

Thank you Steven & John Gaul - and, did you ever imagine that it would grow and that oneday you would have an important place in NZ weather internet history ... huge thanks, cheers.

The mailing list is still going strong. Throw AusPacWx into your search, believe it is being hosted by Yahoo Groups now. I left the list sometime in 02-03 due to infighting but have been on WxZone since its inception.NZstorm wrote:Before the weather forums there was the Aussie weather mailing list. Re: Weather Forum History
I think Brian started the first successful online NZ Weather forum, but decided to close it after some time for reasons best forgotten (sorry Tim). Left in limbo, most of its original members invaded Aussie forums such as austpacwx for a while, until Steven Graham graciously offered to set-up and host this forum early in 2003 (a phoenix of sorts). Foggy, Tony-T and John Gaul were later elected as original moderators in 2006. Steven G. then chose Foggy to take over ownership in 2007.

Good to know its still running. Around the time weatherzone came in the list had almost grinded to a halt so I bailed on it.The mailing list is still going strong.

Re: Weather Forum History
I dont post that much, but I've still been here for about 3 years or so lurking. Its interesting to get some idea of the history of the place. I know NZ Weather started up in Feb 2007 and I think Foggy took over here later that same year around August time I think. Things have come a long way even in that short time. I run a forum for the UK as well and its "celebrating" 5 years since its foundation this year. It seems to invigorate those that have been there from the start and feel as though they are part of the furniture.

Re: Weather Forum History
I was on the Aussie mailing-list as well. Must've folded, certainly the Weatherzone forums have become huge since. (much bigger than this one, but then again there's a much bigger population over there)
