Manukau heads observer wrote:sea breeze and fine skies here on the coast still
Just got a W change here - west coast sea breeze won out over the eastern sea breezes, often the case. The cloud boundary of the convergence moved over, dropping the temp to 23.7, then once the sunshine came back with a different wind direction, temp quickly rose to 26.4
its been southerly mostly today,at times in the afternoon doing its best to go SW as it starts to increase in that quadrant but somethings suppressing it.Fine and sunny all day like yesterday.
Its so stinking hot here, since some stratus has come over it is just going to get worse if stays like this till nightfall.
The cloud locks in the heat

Fancy having the fire going in the middle of summer. Never had to do that before, well here

Unreal, isn't it - we've had the fire going the last couple of nights..
For want of a more technical term, today's weather has been a bit "meh"... had a peek at the sun earlier but clouded over now and I reckon another fire on the cards tonight... thank goodness hubby's on the ball re firewood.
The sun has been shining this afternoon and evening so a fire will not be on the cards tonight but tomorrow, if it's cloudy all day, with a continuing southerly, it might be another question
I've got plenty of chopped firewood out in the garage, but really I want to save it for this winter JohnGaul

Forecast for Canterbury tomorrow is drizzle turning to rain. However, the flow looks to be southeasterly, so Chch might be sheltered by Banks Peninsula. (and get less rain)

Yes, Ben. It's been sort of SE here today and hopefully tomorrows rain will be moreso here rather than ChCh with the SE. It may be interesting to see totals.
blardy hell its warm. reminding me of the warm nights i got in syndey last summer but still a long way off that. what is interesting is that the wind has picked up from the south and the temp climbed 1*C.....on a southerly so the land must still be rather warm. currently 10.30pm and its 20.3 but it feels more like id say 25. house is wide open
Not expecting this to happen I got a huge surprise and treat as the skies overhead in DB region came alive and put on a dramatic, splendid show this afternoon for all everyone down on the beach. Glad I had my camera!!!

Lightning in NZ The right terminology lends a hint as to the nature of the different forms.
A Vertigo Quote.
looks like a nice unexpected heat shower there DT.
well MS have our high at only 24 and we are already basically at 22 here. unless cloud cover moves in (which i cant see happening till later this afternoon) it will be more like 26 today. last night wasn't too bad as we dropped to 16.
Does anyone know what the record low maximum temperature in January is for Wellington? I have hit a maximum of 12c for today so far , its hard to believe its January and must be close to a record....
I think for Kelburn it's 11.6C set on Jan 2, 2007 since temp-records began in 1931, but that's 125m asl (2nd lowest is 11.8C on Jan 9, 1998). For Wgtn Aero (4m asl) I think it's 13.2C also on Jan 2, 2007 since records began in 1972.
Yes its hard to beleive its summer out there right now, Id much prefer a nice warm balmy summers evening then this crap.
Temp now only hovering around 9 or 10C and heavy drizzle has been wafting through the eastern parts of christchurch all day.
