It will be interesting how much rain you get when you get the NW flows.

Right now, the wind is increasing in force, very warm northerly, only three or four raindrops so far tho. we did have a bit of rain on Sunday nite - enough to know that the gutters need to be cleaned out. I am anticipating the purchase of a weather recording station in the near future. PM me with details of what you think is best. I will try to keep you all updated with weather from the west.

Yes Leighton it is,i had a good discussion with Nev last summer about the accuracy of my recording set up and he felt it was largely well set up, but then at the time i had bare ground in and around under the thermometer, that is now fully grassed.
Your questioning my recordings is so typical of Canterbury plains people (i used to be one 10 years ago)who have simply no idea of the extremes of inland North Canterbury, because the low cloud that has influenced your weather for so long now often doesn't make it this far in land and also given the NE air stream over the country today has been blowing from areas around inland Marlborough you're saying that it shouldn't be that high??? And after all is nothing to what it normally get to.
I see that Masterton had the national high of 29C,where was Culverden today??? 5 C less than me ??its only 15km from me,but hey i've already proven that the recording station has been faulty in the past and have no faith in its recordings
30.3C in twizel today so very much agree with you richard on the extreme heat the inland canterbury area gets and is often never reported

Hopefully _b and if the rain wakes me  I'll most diffinately make an effort to get up and post a report about it... so far it's been a day of wind, airflow instability overhead from what I can make of the clouds overhead and a light splattering of rain... the pattern has changed right? and, the rains they are a coming...
wait!!!! i thought i heard a rumble...

I needed to reboot this computer after that last post, however, after some closer inspection and investigation outside... I realized that the rumble I heard was possibly the result of a strong gust of wind blewing a chair over out on the deck!! well, calling it a day and going to get some rest.

"where was Culverden today??? 5 C less than me ??"

High was 27.4C at Culverden, 27.2C at Hanmer.

"but hey i've already proven that the recording station has been faulty in the past and have no faith in its recordings"

How did you prove it?
The Culverden AWS is new. Only running since August. Previously it was a SYNOP.

Currently 25.4°C... nice strong winds...

My intention this afternoon was take a few pic's from Rangikapiti Pa of the convergence line coming through the DB area... as I walked up... the local firestation siren sounded...

When I finally got to the top... I started taking a few pics, at first I did not notice the smoke in the distance...

This pic was taken at 16:13hrs this afternoon looking towards Cable Bay.

ps: sorry unable to update currently with regards to the nature of the fire incidence out over in the area - however, once I hear news, I will update accordingly.

Wow, quite some variation out there. No recorded rain here from this event as yet. Had a very quick shower at 2pm yesterday with some sporadic drops but was not enough to record any rainfall. Just very light drizzle, not even that6 out there atm just damp air is probably a better way of describing it for the meantime.

Getting cold here. May have to light the fire, only 12C outside and the wind is quite quite cold now. :-s

28mm so far here in Halswell from purely drizzle, heavy at times and non stop for a good 18 hours. Rain radar shows dissolving now happening if the last 2 or 3 hours are to go by. Very dull once again this morning with light drizzle falling at the moment.

This El Nino is nothing like the one in 1982-83 (Or 1997/8 for that matter) - locally in 1983 Jan & Feb were both cool and very dry, but sunny in Jan and reasonably so in Feb. So far this January has been wet, cloudy and cool and a candidate for "worst" January.
