Round 2!

Unread post by 03Stormchaser »

Snow has now begain fall for the second time over the last couple of days!!! In CHCH that is!

This snow is coming from the south and seems not to be really linked to the low situated of the east coast. So hopefully the worst is still to come later today/tonight

Current weather:

Wind: 13 km/hr. WSW
Rain Today: 0
Humidity: 54%

Add snow too that list!!

More snow showers here in Queenstown over night, about 1cm new snow in Town.

Low to the East of NZ has enormous heavy snow potential but we will to wait and see how much precipitation comes East.

Another lovely fine day here in Omarama. Warm and sunny, with no more snow lying anywhere. More blossoms on the trees too.

Oh, and Brian, do you ever get tired of hawking your software here? ;) :P

The weather seems to have improved in Chch since the early morning snowfall. The snow eased to sleet showers, and these became less frequent. The sun has now come out, but from the forecasts, it seems like this improvement will be only temporary.

The southerly looks like it's waxing over the North Island, with some more roads affected, but the heavy stuff must be yet to come.

Check out this - go surf the inland sea! Looks like a strong southerly or southwesterly is lashing Taupo. The clouds look like they're building up over the central high country - no doubt the snow showers are increasing there. While it still looks relatively fine in Taupo at this stage, the cold wintry showers are predicted to spread over northern areas. It's not very often that you hear MetService forecasts of snow not only for the central high country, but for the high areas further north, well south of Auckland above about 500 metres in this case.

Edited note: the notes on Taupo were accurate at the time of the original posting - of course the weather and lake conditions can (and will at some stage) change.

We had really really heavy snow showers on the plains today, they were brilliant. MY sister who lives in town woke me up at 9am ringing to tell me it was snowing in Chch and clear skies here (yet again!). But we got our share and I am expecting it to start back up again this afternoon with some heavy dosage on the grounds.

As I had hoped, it has begun. Kids have been sent home early because of it and I'm off to make a snowman. Hehehe, I feel so childish!

Proves that the flow is more south/southeast than southwest now, so it's not just coastal. Brief light showers (of the liquid variety) passing over central Chch with sunny breaks and a comparatively balmy 6-7C. I guess this about as clement the weather will get here today. The wind has freshened withing the last hour or so, but still far from galeforce.

Not fair!

Hope you get a good dumping Smeagol_. I see Springfeild is between 400 - 430 meters above sea level, that should ensure some good snow over this forecasted period of cold weather.

Wounder if Chch will get anymore :-k

The smilies afterwards mean's it's just tounge in cheak. :) Maybe a bit too much tounge

As Austin Powers once said:

"I'm just trying to get a rise out of you, that's all! For shits and giggles!"

That doesn't necessarily mean I'm like that though. Like the others have said the weather display software looks good from the sites I've seen. I'm sure Gary doesn't truley mean it but maybe best not to say stuff that might look demoting to the person your talking about as it can be interpreted differently than how you thought it was originaly going to be meant.

I say Tomato you say Tomato (You know what I mean ;) ), no more to say, ditto.....

Thunderstorms were forecast for Auckland today, pitty they didn't make landfall. That upper cold pool went just a little too north.

whew
its just hard enough dealing with the competition software and their sly remarks / slander / abuse on other weather forums, without having to deal with it here in my own home country.

i never push weather display on anyone, and have in fact recommended other software to people, like Freewx, VWS, etc, when people have had ongoing issues (you get that sometimes, its hard to know what the problems is, sometimes it comes down to a bad memory chip on the mother board) but, there are over 3000 happy users around the world using weather display, including NOAA, the US Navy, and even NZ's Met Service's Cheif meterlogist (I presume he is still using it)

If you were to just look at thickness, snow is more likely in Auckland tonight than Invercargill.
\:D/

Today's thickness

Auckland 5290
Wellington 5286
Invercargill 5335

I observed a nice solid hail shower in Freemans Bay at 3.15pm today.
A partly cloudy, cold day for AK with a wide scattering of showers, max 11C.

Not suprised there is snow near Turangi.

5290 THK for Auckland must be close to a record - at least a 1 in 10 to 1 in 20 year value I would think.

As for Gary, well, he likes to dish out the abuse to weather forecasters too, its frustrating, but thats the price we pay for input from Omarama I guess.

Tokaanu and Turangi are about 350m asl, virtually at lake level. Taupo obs (check the webcam of previous page of this thread) showed 5C at 6PM.

Some Northland stations were reporting even colder temperatures than Auckland today :o, with showers passing over. Well MetService did predict snow for the higher ranges north of the central North Island plateau. Interestingly the storm and rainband system moving back onto the North island, while it should raise freezing levels tomorrow, may bring the heaviest and lowest snow for the North Island overnight and early tomorrow morning. I suggest this on memory of past events where increases in precipitation intensity drops the freezing level before the warmer air from the new system takes over. (classic warm advection scenario)
That's even more likely to be the case for Malborough and Canterbury tonight and tomorrow. I think the worst threat for Canterbury with this storm won't be flooding, slips, or felled trees, but snow and windchill adversely affecting livestock. It least we've had plenty of warning - this may mean negative impacts could be minimised somewhat. BTW, I'm surpised the highway from Chch to Akaroa at Hilltop (about 450m asl) hasn't been closed by heavy snow (Press photo showed the snow was certainly heavy up there) - the graders must've been working overtime!

While you are correct, Auckland recorded a thickness of 5292 on the 5th July 2003, during the big North Island snow event.

The 850hpa temperature over Auckland today was around minus 3.
Not the sort of temps you think of for Auckland. Cb's today looked very wintry with solid precip falling, just like I used to see when I was living in Otago. :D

Sounds hard to believe, but could there even be snow on some higher areas near Auckland tonight, say the Waitakares or Hunuas?

A fresh southerly, about 4C, and some brief showers (but dry at the moment) this evening in Chch - the 'calm' before the storm?
