There was a Pyrocumulus over a fire somewhere Darfield way or so but before I could get a photo it had disappeared.

Re: General February Weather
Yeah, when that southerly change came through it didnt carry much strength. The little wind kep't rising the Temps to 29 degrees. Not sure if it will rise up to 30C, but anything can happen here.
5th concecutive day above 30C for good ol' Rangiora, with the highest temperature of 36.3C on the 23rd.

Re: General February Weather
Little rain here with the change, least the SSW is lighter, less daylight heating in this respect lessens the wind speed, sunny now.

Refreshingly cooler 17.1C with DPs down to 15C, few clouds and a moderate SW breeze.
Only managed 3.0mm of light showers yesterday bringing the months total to a mere 11.5mm.

Re: General February Weather
It was just an offchance. Very quickly the smoke went up and then a Cu form on the top of it. I was buzy burying some roosters and when I looked up, WOW there was this PyCu to the west of here. It was better before this but when I went back to house to photograph it, it sort of weakoned a little.Lacertae wrote:By the way John, beautiful picture of the pyrocumulus !![]()

... but however I was pleased with the shot.

Re: General February Weather
No. It's an old tradition that when conditions that are suitable for 'burning off', which happens a lot here in Canterbury over the late summer/Autumn months, is to dig a hole and bury some roosters, which some people may think of as a foul thing to do, excuse the pun. This encourages growth in the smoke as it moves up into the atmosphere to form a cloud and then depending on the amount of roosters you bury, increases the size of the cloud to a point that it may deliver rain and more so if the roosters are quite virile, a clap of thunder may be heard.Michael wrote:Were they too loud in the mornings? because they dont lay eggs?

As there was thunder around the South Canterbury area that day, I was trying to draw the related activity into here at West Melton, by using this method, but unfortunately it went out to sea. Never the less, I was unsuccessful.

Latest ECMWF low tracking to the north of NZ looks interesting. No indication of TC statis, yet

Re: General February Weather
Sitting on 27 degrees here with overcast skies, no sun today as yet and a light SW breeze. No sign of the NWester or sun otherwise would be on the 32 that blue skies forecasted for today.

Re: General February Weather
ahh soo..if you were "buzy" burying roosters when the PyCu had already been formed to the west of you,had those poor roosters bin buried in vane?? Re: General February Weather
Not really. According to the tradition, a rooster may be buried at any time during pyrocumulusing, but in this case I was a bit out of synch, possibly because of the positioning of the moon (it's very close, full and bright at night at the moment ) and also the pre-shock waves of the impending earthquake and tsunami, probably ruined any chances of an event happening.Richard wrote:
