Perhaps the dewpoints are such that the cooling of the overlying air proceeds just far enough to form the fog before the sun rises.

i think so. it's not like in spring when we have a lot of snow nearby. the NE wind is still doin its thing too

Yea -1 over night here to, 1 degrees now and we should see a warm day here as well might even get to the mid 20's. Got the fire started as we were late home last night so the house is on the cool side.

Yes, a little warmer in most places than previous morns, but still some cool temps around...
Tara Hills (near Omarama) on at least -2C.
Dunedin Aero and Blenheim Aero also on at a least -1C.
And Timaru Aero and Waiouru around zero.

This will be Taumarunui's 4th consecutive morn with temps around -1C, giving Waiouru a good run for coolest North Island temps.

Dunedin Aero with -0.7C was colder than both Queenstown (-0.6C) and Wanaka (0.0C), and I think Waiouru with -1.4C may have been the only place in the North Island to get below zero.
