just back from a Fire Force meeting
wow, the CB line moving SE onto northern NZ looks impressive on the rain radar and sat images
and tomorrow's CB lines are starting to take shape nicely behind this line!

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
I used to get up the roof in my younger days of thunderstorms watching. I don't do it now, well you don't have to here in West Melton. I once fell off the roof and hit the deck, whilst climbing down the ladder. I was more worried about my camera than myself as I didn't want to loose that valuable recording that I made.

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
can see lightning flashes out to my west, but not very frequent. Have a local fog developing
I see M/S have updated the thunder outlook
http://metservice.com/national/warnings ... rm-outlook
a bit of a downgrade on the tornado potential...at this stage...

I don't think anything is happening there. According to Steven Grahams LR and the one on the 'other' weather forum, it is much further north than that, probably around the Nelson area.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:Storm cell now showing over inland North Canterbury foothills, moderate intensity

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
the Waiuku station shows when the CB line passed over clearly
http://hamgap.atnz.net/waiuku.htm
only 0.2m here
must have died alright (land had cooled down alot by the time the line reached here)
next line of showers looks massive on sat image....but might have peaked too early?...i.e the low/trough needs to move a bit closer yet...

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
interesting to see a blow up occur very quickly in the firth of thames and travel SE along on the edge of the Kaimai ranges...Paeroa will have got an rude awakening, as evident on the rain radar....very unstable out there at the moment....as soon as we get some day time heating, things will be all OK I suspect!

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
Unfortunately I aren't able to chase today. I'm heading down to Whakatane and across to Murupara. I may take the old camera with me though.
Fingers crossed someone gets to see a good cell and I'll get to see some photo's later.
It's very foggy here this morning, reminds me of Hamilton. Temp 14.3°C.

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
Isolated Thunderstorms across Northland with that Front last night. Looks like we keep the unstable weather over the NorthIsland into next week.
The big Bay of Plenty Hailstorm/Waterspouts was a year ago this week.
Upper level cold air this time of year makes for interesting weather as we often still have quite good moisture /warmth .

Re: Deep Subtropical Low 12-18th May!!!
Looks like the storms wore themselves out crossing the Abel Tasman NT last night and by the time they reached Nelson were just moderate showers, 5.6mm (up to around 9am, now up to 9mm) here according to that private weather station linked to earlier. Metservice has 0.2mm as the 24hr rain total to 9am.
Can't see how as it appears the private weather station is no more than 1-2km away from the metservice gauge.
I'm liking these regular fronts, if you miss out on one there's always another on the way to get your hopes up.
edit: just saw the thunderstorm outlook posted above, small tornados! are they anything like mini tornados?

I think that's meant to be 0.2mm in the last hour.Tim S wrote: Metservice has 0.2mm as the 24hr rain total to 9am.![]()

Its great that the metservice actually have the balls to put the word 'tornado' in their warnings. I wish the BoM would, although they would probably have to make sure they make it clear 'showers of cows' aren't that likely.
