Exciting stuff! Whish i was in the thick of it!
I thought that Geoff Mackley may of been Florida for this one but apparently he is back home in Auckland.
The news about Frances is overshadowing the Cat4 Typhoon, Songda which is now moving across the Jaanses Island of Anakawa

Micheal, you surprise me with your info! Good on ya!
Only one I know of in 1990 was from Pete McGhee's father, I've got the pictures of these funnel clouds:

I haven't heard of that tornado Brian, I'll have to do another gathering of info at some point.1990 Ngauruwahia (Waikato) - Pete McGhee’s father was hitchhiking when he saw two funnel clouds, passing car stopped to offer lift and conversation went something
like:
“Where are you going?â€
“Anywhere, as long as it's away from that thing†[pointing]
“Bloody hell! Get in!†Car travelled about 5km further up road before they stopped and looked back and took a photo:).

it went along way that tornado, the full length of the peninsular
it was on a very active cold front
it came ashore at Big Bay
and first house was a house only being built....just the frames of the wall....and it twisted and pushed over the wooden frames
alot of pine trees had the branches ripped off and or they were twisted or pulled out of the ground and then later died....
it was not a very wide tornado, only a few metres at the base
it snaked around alot, ended up sucking up lots of shells off a beach!
where it ended up, west of Waiuku, it picked a farmer up off his motorbike as he was bringing the cows in...
i remember the morning,....we had torrential rain.....never seen it that heavy since....
i just couldnt remember which day in sept
thanks michael

Re Awhitu Tornado.
I can remember that morning. The thunderstorm started about 7am and didn't ease until 9.30 am in central AK. There was hail also.
Tornadoes path must have been 15-20km.
1990 was a big year for tornadoes in NZ. There were a number of tornadoes. 12th August 1990, 43 buildings were badly damaged at Bellblock and Inglewood, Taranaki.
