September weather
I'm picking September to be........
Drier, sunnier, cooler than normal, for Auckland....and most of NZ.
More frost than normal. (boring weather).
Not sure what NIWA were prdicting. Anyway, they didn't pick the cold August.

It sure will be.NZstorm wrote:
September 2004 has certainly started off stable and it looks that way for the coming week.
I'm bored already

Southerly was pathetic today here considering the on coming anticyclone.
Models now don't expect it to exceed 1040 hPa now

Anticyclonic gloom, anyone ????

Yes it's been a wimpy southerly, even out on more exposed Banks Peninsula - just a few brief showers this morning with a fresh southerly. Around 11C, so no fresh snow on the hills (but still quite a large patchy coating from earlier falls).
Looking at UNISYS, the week certainly looks settled, except on the South Island West Coast, and next weekend's front and trough doesn't look particularly active.

Agreed.
I hope things get more interesting as things warm up. One thing I'm reading is that El nino causes drier weather in the east, how do thunderstorms tie up with this then here in Canterbury? Apparently they (NIWA etc) say winds will be more from the WSW, is this good for thunderstorms John? What's your opinion on why conditions are better here in the east for thunder when El nino's are about?
Thanks.
Also, I see a line of rain heading for the North right now (Auckland etc), hopefully it builds into something for you guys.

Ne sea-breezes mingling with the WSW can cause intability as what it did inthe 1983/83 thunderstorm season. The last big El nino in the 1992 thunderstorm activity here was rather dismal in comparisonAaron J Wilkinson wrote:Agreed.

In Russell, Far North.
A fine mild morning here but now overcaste with light showers about.
El nino if it occurs will bring warmer weather to Canterbury and Thunderstorms like the warmer weather however the stronger winds are less good for Cu + Cb development.
Maybe less Thunderstorm activity but stronger Thunderstorms when they do occur.
