There is a lot of sferics on the radio tonight however no good for dxing but there is a complex depression south of the cook islands so it maybe from there
Scene as I can't access the metservice lightning thingy I'm not sure where this lightning is occuring. I'm just woundering though if it's possible that it's happening out in the Canterbury Bight, out off the coast from Ashburton for e.g.? Would that be right? That's where a upper pool of cold (500mb -23C) air is sitting right now (well, AVN said so ), it is of course dependent on the dewpoint and surface temp below that cold pool, but from all that I know I'm thinking it could be there. Maybe, maybe not.
When do you mean exactly John, could be thunder this weekend (what where in now) or next weekend?
I rather like the look of the SW changes expected Tuesday afternoon and again around the middle of Thursday as having fairly cold unstable air with them, and therefore some thunder/hail potential for Canterbury. I'd charge the camera batteries up if I were you John, just in case...
Actually I was thinking the same thing. The unstable air I have made mention of in other threads is due tomorrow (not today). A small chance of thunder in Canterbury Tuesday afternoon. Also a chance of thunder in the Waikato and Auckland. Its all about timing, frontal changes coming in, in the afternoon so as to give the chance for some environmental heating in advance. Just have to wait and see how the day develops.

I don't think so
It's gone southerly here now with a slight barometer rise.
The lower NI might get something tomorrow.
I agree it has something to do with timing.
The magic word is disturbed and I hope that MetSerivice use this word in it's new advective forecast

Snow to low levels on the hills down South on Saturday.
A small chance maybe but I don't think so.
If MetService had their Severe Convection Outlook posted for tomorrow, I would say that there would be a unlikely possibility.
Timing and a good NE is a factor here. Thursday could be more friutful.
A nice glaciated towering Cu has popped up in the last half hour between Amberley and Chch, not quite a CB yet as there doesnt seem to be any precip falling out of it, but give it time... Other active Cu developing all around as well.
For those that are having trouble accessing it still, the metstrike map is showing some new strikes both about 80km east and inland west of BP... Anyone know a way of capturing that map image to post if anything interesting shows up?
Yes Tony, I see all the stuff out there. I might run away to John's soon!! He's the closest to me in town. It's hopeless trying to photograph things where I am because of the buildings!!
Good stuff Tony! and Angela (hope I spelt that right)
Yes there is a way of capturing it. Press "Print Screen SysRq" on your keyboard and then go to your graphics program of choice, go to edit paste and then crop out the ligthning map and save it. Hope it works, good to here lightning is about today!!!

We got a short sharp shower out of that cloud, and another from a bigger CB to the west, which formed south of Mt Grey and is also moving towards Kaikoura - I would expect some electrical activity out of those clouds in the next few hours.
Well there's lots of Cb's to the north and NW but I can't see anything coming from the south anymore, is that it for Chch today? Unfortunately I think yes. I did see a big blob of white just below B'sP on the 1pm sat so I wounder where that'll be on the 2pm one which is very soon.
Can't do much being stuck at work, the pain the pain!!! But yeah things look like the've finished for the day here, then again it never really began though. It's all occuring to the west and north. Bugger! Lets hope something miraculous comes through later on tonightt! nah........
Hopefully you get something Tony and can report something for us.
Plenty of Cb crossing the Auckland area this afternoon , most of it on the weak side but one or two stronger cells about. Have a couple of quite good looking Cb's to our South -Southwest right now.

Funny coincidence that there should be reports of thunderstorm activity in Canterbury today, when there were thunderstorms in the area exactly a year ago to the day, including Chch.
