Another newbie to the Forum!!

Gidday guys,

I am a 29 year old farmer/electrician based just out of Helensville to the north of Auckland. I have always had a interest in the weather for both recreational and work reasons. Anyway, I finally saved enough spare cash up and purchased a Lcrosse 2310 WX from WDU in OZ. Altho not a top of the line unit (I'd love a Davis) it works really well now after some initial "issues"...

Thanks to Brian H for his support and efforts.

So here I am here, I have been reading the posts for a few weeks and hope I can learn from all of your experience. I don't consider myself much of a forecaster, more a keen observer, and I have to confess to being addicted to Weather Display!!! (the wife cannot understand it!).

Hopefully I can offer my weather experiences to you guys, our farm is around 5km from the west coast, so we are currently experiencing 20.8knt SW gusting 30.... temp is ok around 15C in the sun, but very cold in the squally rain and showers!!

How long has this place been going for? I have been reading back thru all the old posts, I only wish I had found it sooner!! I will have a load of ridiculous questions I am sure...in the meantime, I have been buying as many NZ weather books as possible... to attempt and "upskill"!!

Is anyone else running ther own home/farm weather station on here? I'd love to swap stories and ideas!

This incarnation of the forum started in March 2003 and the previous one was going for 18 (?) months before that.

I'm still learning and have just about got the hang of nowcasting

I have a Davis WMII station but the anemometer is only at about 4m agl and too near the roof so the readings tend to be a bit low.

Gidday Michael,

I have seen your posts regarding the frequent winds from the western quater...

Have to say every time I have been out on the farm today its been bloody cold, then followed by a bit of heat, then rain, then wind then sun... you get the picture!! Still I guess it is spring, and the Equinox (real start of spring) is tommorow....

Should see some min grass temp increases and get our pastures growing after this reasonably cold winter!

You certainly catch the weather being next to the west coast.

Yeah I will eventually be uploading all of my WX station reports to a web site .... I actually need some advice on this...as I am bit of an internet novice when it comes to finding somewhere to host it and also the whole FTP setup of WD etc etc....

Hi Macca, Good to get another weather watcher on the forum. I'm running a station I built myself in Christchurch which is an ongoing project. Got barometer and humidity and possibly dew point to add soon. You can read a little more here

Mate what an awesome setup you have. Plus what an awesome achievement building your own sensor suite and array. Very impressive!!

I don't really have the knowledge to do the WX station building, but am working on the practical weather observing!!

I have been to your site before your revision, and read the entire site...I have bookmarked it and will return regularly from now on!!

I have to say I settled for the poor mans Lacrosse 2310 WX. Its OK, but it has limitations. I bought it to see if I would like the hobby...now I wish I had a Davis VP with a Boltek lightning detector!!!

Still, no rush eh!

the best thing is to give me a phone call maca, re hosting a web site, ftp settings, etc...as i provide a free place to host web pages for NZ users of weather display

Thanks for your comments, certainly no rush. Nice to have a long term project and also be able to share ideas with others both on weather and technical matters. I've got a bit of work to do before I can get the other parameters on the web site.
Observing is a very important part of looking at weather trends and nowcasting!
I'm sure you will pick up some good info reading and contributing posts here. Folks of different backgrounds with different ideas.
