Thanks Weather Watcher. I heard a radio report today from someone living near the fire experiencing an ash fall.Weather Watcher wrote:Correct, the radar will be detecting smoke particles or ash. Based on investigations into the 2012 Tongariro (Te Maari) volcanic eruptions, the radars are able to detect particles down to about 0.5 to 1.0mm diameter.

Re: General February Weather
The wind is east to northeast, so the fire should be spreading away from most inhabited areas on the Port Hills.

Another photo of the smoke cloud over the Port Hills yesterday, shows the low level NE wind and westerly flow higher up.

Yes, there was a good pyro cumulus cloud yesterday afternoon, which I took on my cell phone.

The longer range outlook indicates a dry pattern returning for the north and east of NZ, excellent to have this very moist rainy trough crossing north eastern parts of the country.

Re: General February Weather
A horrendous week. Fire reached within a few hundred metres of our place but we're ok. Really hurting for our neighbours up Worsley Spur, and beyond. In laws in Westmorland had a good outcome too thankfully.
Feeling totally done in.

Re: General February Weather
Grey old overcast and drizzly day here which was quite good considering the dry weather we have had lately. 4.6mm from the occasional showers and drizzle patches moving across from the convergence moving through around lunchtime, and the drizzly NE from then on. Humidity up as well around the 90% mark.
Hope a lot of this also dropped on the Port Hills.

With a wind change you can end up with a bigger nastier fire because the fire can reignite along along the edges of old fire track and very quickly form a wide fire front.katipo wrote:When will the wind in Christchurch swing back to the usually reliable NE ?
Should help with the Port Hills fire fighting efforts, the Westerlies of the past few days must have been a pain for them.

Re: General February Weather
I see CWU have started this up in the last couple days. Unsure why we need to pay to receive weather txtx given there are already a number of weather apps about, WW and MS. I guess CWU don't have an app and this is there answer, innovative at least

I'll stick with MetService and other resources I use to forecast the weather.03Stormchaser wrote:I see CWU have started this up in the last couple days. Not looking like there's going to be any more rain this month to add to the 2.2mm total so far, dont get many months with rainfall that low.

Just enjoyed couple hours on boogie board in sun and decent water temp while watching storms off the coast here at Raglan.
