80kmh+ winds here over the last hour or so easing back a little and dark clouds looming to the west even some are towering but are being capped off by the upper strong winds.
Radar at 4pm shows some heavy rain coming which I have attached below.
Cheers

Dose not look to be much in the way of Thunderstorms with that Front and no Tornadoes I'm sure.

Satellite dose show a crop of Cb clouds behind the Front which may produce some overnight TS on the West Coast.

I think thurs Afternoon or Evening could be interesting in Canterbury if the cold change comes through at the right time ie pm before dark.

The gales must be over for Canterbury. Some brief spits of rain this evening, but the wind is only fresh at times now. (out on the peninsula)

Well, I'm wrong...tried to make a punt and got it wrong.

Despite that juicy shear plus front and the mountains we really need that good cold upper air, nice job Tony!

This Thursday eh? Will have a look!

Some very welcome rain here this morning lasted until about 8:30am and then another shower came through at 10am. :D
Rain was Moderate very close to heavy here at one stage when I was having breakfast this morning but I have recorded 8.2mm with the rain this morning.
Farmers will be happy it's not much but there's still more rain to come this week with rain and showers tomorrow I see MS have it out for TS posssable duee to convergence in South Canty hmm hopefully that willl drag up over CHCH  if not it will atleast have some heavy rain in it thats if a TS develops with the change.
But yeah Thursday does look better for TS actually I have some pics I took last nigh of some bubbly shower clouds to the SW.
Believe it or not thay looked very Tornadoic ;) at times especially at about 9pm when the sun was going down with the red under it.
Cheers

Showers lingered until about 2.30PM out on the peninsula (heavy just before dawn), but only brief ones from late morning.

No Thunder tomorrow, southerly is going to have little impact.

Thursday looks better  but I think further south looks better than chch for thunderstorms. becauser of the colder air,

Just checked fencrpost.co.nz. maybe I have read the maps wrong, Lets hope I have :)

Fine at first on Thursday but a blustery cold southwesterly change developing during the afternoon with hail and thunder, and snow to 900m on Banks Peninsula on Thursday night. Southwesterlies may be gale force on the Peninsula, strong elsewhere.

Damn! So it's not a good week to start my road trip around the South Island with my tent and sleeping bag then?

Suspect I'll be staying in a few motels then!

Yesterday was a beautiful, sunny day, and the night was clear. This morning started out well, but the day has turned to (grey) custard.

....by the way, Thursday is now reduced to a 2 as it could be like today's fizzer southerly.
Sadly anticyclonic conditions look likely to roll in next week. This always happens when there is cyclonic activity in latitudes north of NZ/Australia.
This season they seem to be quite severe.
I noticed the latest SOI had a huge swing to the negative?
Must of been a fault? Didn't look right to me :-k

I understand SOI is correct, but not expected to stay that negative for long (NIWA)

Roll on (in) the anticyclones!

For Tich: I don't think TC crossing of the Q'land coast is all that uncommon.

Yesterdays one always looked like a fizzer, I now think the southerly on Thursday will come thru to late for thunderstorms, but cold southeries and snow down to 1000m will still be on the cards
