Settling?
I see only the Milford Road and Arthur's Pass have so far been mentioned in the AA Report as requiring caution/chains due to snow.
Southerly hit central Chch about 1/2 hour ago - dropped to a chilly 6C (from about 10-12C I guess) with showers. Interesting looking mammatus cloud to the north earlier this afternoon.

Some showers crossing Auckland this afternoon but the CB clouds dont look very active.
Looks like most of the snowfall today has been above 1000m.
The next Front this evening will bring the snow level down much lower. Southland ,South Otago and the Dunedin area will get the worst of it.
The southerly buster arrived here about 2.00pm,hail sleet and driving rain for about one hour then cleared from the south, great rugby weather.
Looks like round two hitting the south about now.
Clear skies in Chch this evening, but really cold - frosty soon if it stays like this. (I notice that Timaru was already down to 0.5C on the 6PM obs) But the 2nd front is still to come, so probably won't be waking up to clear skies tomorrow morning.
I notice MetService seems to be conservative in their forecasting of snow levels - I'd say (from Deano's and Gary's posts) that the snow levels have been lower than predicted in Canterbury today, even though they were probably only brief falls.
The skies went really clear after the rain pushed on through, it is getting cold as you say ben.
There looked to be a Cb on the plains earlier in the day but I'm not sur about that one.
My friend and me went out and about to see what we could observe. We went up to the Victoria Park area hoping there would be a bolt or two somewhere out on the plains but nothing. You get a really good view up there and if something happens you'll know about it. When looking at the lightning map, one or two strikes looked to of occured south of Chch. We went right up to that big TV tower thing (sugarloaf) and I reckon we got some sleet at one point.
Here's a pic of the Plains and Alps with dark cloud up above:
Quite an active front over the lower central North Island this morning which will give good snow to the Mt Ruapehu ski Area, and snow down to National Park Village. Desert Road may also be affected.
But the 2nd front is still to come, so probably won't be waking up to clear skies tomorrow morning.
I have woken up to clear skies in Chch - the front and brief period of rain went through in the early hours (sometime around 4AM), and then cleared. But 7AM radar shows showers still crossing Banks Peninsula (where I'll be shortly),probably with snow on the higher hills.
Nice picture Aaron! Cant see nething happening today so far the skies are clear in every direction with a light breeze and temperture here at 10 C outside and 20 C inside!
We will have to go out again! but chase a storm this time not the moon! lol nd wheres my money LOL
A bit more snow on the hills here, but not much lower than about 450m and thinish. Though we are still getting rain, sleet and flurries now and then. 2.7C
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.
Like Dunedin - only a slight dusting of snow on the hills of Banks Peninsula, visible mostly above about 600 metres, but I noticed traces in sheltered spots at Hilltop (about 470 metres asl) as I came over this morning. Cloudy alternating with sunny on BP, with a few brief spits this afternoon. Southerly has become very strong and gusty (probably up to gale) since about 3.30PM. Not at all pleasant outside, even without the rain.
Started raining just after my last message. Small hail and sleet added to the mixture this evening. A truly wintry evening - snow level should be dropping on the hills. I wonder if Chch is now getting the same.
Some active weather scooting up the eastern side of the country just offshore. Must be some good hail out there. I wonder how much of that weather will get onto the NI. Perhaps the Volcanic Plateau is in for an overnight snowfall.
