Cold southwesterly outbreak for long weekend

Unread post by tich »

Should deliver at least some of what the ski-fields need. Not a really polar blast forecast at this stage, but enough to bring the white stuff down to quite low levels in the far south. It should certainly be alot colder than what we've been getting here in Chch (and many other parts of NZ) for the last few days.

I certainly hope so.
We have had 3 days of winter so far and the temperatures have been rather unseasonable.
A 20C maximum yesterday is not on for winter.
Bring on the proper winter weather

I like having a few unseasonably warm winter days - preferably the days when I do my washing. (did it today and it all got dry)
But I do look forward to some proper winter weather, not that we haven't had any so far this year. (remember early April - that would be considered a cold outbreak even in mid-winter)

Its almost impossible getting any washing dry here due to the continual cloudiness and dew points with light showers every few hours :x

Warmer times means better chance of thunderstorms!

I actually heard on Newstalk ZB this morning that there could be thunder during Saturday night, I'm not sure where they got their forecast from becasue it was different from Metservice's but only slightly different from Bluskies. But different all the same.

Anyway, yes, winter hasn't really made itself feel present yet has it. I remember when I was a kid puddles along the side of the road used to be totally frozen with thick ice but I haven't seen that to much these days, maybe it's the lack of puddles? lol.

Also, thanks Steven for correcting me the other day on how to spell Mammatus properly, man it looked weired the way I spelled it. Only just remembered now!! But good to get these things sorted!! ;)

The weather down in Invercargill really is crap. MetService even agree. This must be their funniest forecast they've put out this year.

I'm so gutted I'm going to miss the cold outbreak. Does anyone know of a website which has rainfall / temperature that goes back a week? I'm overseas for the next week and won't be able to do my rain gauge and min / max etc.

The other day on the Metservice Severe Weather Outlook the forecaster shone with their use of the word Ameliorate (though I would debate its use in the sentence it was in), but then had me in fits  when they wrote this... not once, but twice...

Severe Weather Outlook
For period beyond the next day or two
How to use the Severe Weather Outlook

Valid: Fri 04 June to Mon 07 June
Issued: Wed 02 June 2004 at 02:15 pm
A major trof will move over the country on Friday and Saturday and gradually move to the east on Sunday.

The trof will push a couple of fronts northward over the country on Friday, but it is not until later Saturday that they clear the north of the North Island

I saw this yesterday to and it's not the first time they have used it, see:

Could be the same person writing trof and then looking on this forum to see who picked it up![/quote]

Graeme, weather has been mucky in Fiji lately, could be settling down now though.

I see Met Service are predicting snow to 300m in south over the weekend.
My prediction is to as low as 100m Sunday.

As for thunder Aaron. Slight chance of thunder out on Banks Pensinsula with the passage of fronts both Saturday and Sunday.

The tropical convergence zone must be pushed north of the Fijiain Islands by this time of the year with the cooler drier SE trades from our SW etc ;)

Rain quite heavy now ,hopefully when it eases off during the night it will be a westerly flow rather than SW as usually you can get the washing dry as there would be considerable fine periods if you look out for the showers ;)

I'll be out there on Sunday. I just hope there won't be a repeat of the gales that battered the area (albeit only briefly) in the the early hours of last Monday, at least not at night like last time - can be unnerving if you want to get to (or back to) sleep. Probably some hail and a dusting of snow on the hills as well, though not sure about thunder - it didn't occur with last Monday's front, even though it was forecast.

As far up as Dunedin?
Probably the Catlins will cop the wintry blast the most severely, but I'd guess some of the white stuff reaches Dunedin's hill suburbs as well.

I'm ready Steven! \:D/ Hopefully this period of NW has warmed things up a bit, a NE (whether it be light or not) is forecasted to blow before the front so things look good. John, is your Handycam ready?

First dusting on the hills for Dunedin this morning. Flagstaff and Mt Cargill have some icing at the top (about the 600m line).

Broken Skies with 3.8C at the moment...

I don't think so. I did favour a 24th July 1993 scenario for today but we need a ridge to kick in the south Tasman Sea. The SW flow is too active for that to happen :(
Boring cold day today anyway compared to yesterday.

Snowing in Omarama most of today. After the fat person's armpit which is summer in Japan, I welcome snow.
