Rain rate peaked at 50mm/hr but has eased back now. Very intense!

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Have had reports of heavy rain as it's passed over eastern coastline but no thunder. Whether it invigorates as it goes over the plains yet to be determined. Nothing here in rolleston yet

Either way very impressive looking as it's coming in.
A few heavy showers just west of here too that have built recently.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Recent MetService tweet (see link) has the following radar grab (for 12:07pm your time on Boxing Day) on it showing an arc of heavy rain/storms approaching Christchurch form the east. As per the UK, would that be an unusual direction of travel for a storm in NZ?

Almost unheard of! But, despite some torrential rain, I've not heard any reports of thunder.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Passed overhead here with some Impressive turbulent skies as per photo, wind swung around to the SE and then East now back to SW again.
Some heavy rain at times although not as torrential as other areas.
Not too often we get a set up like that in from the east.

Yes not a thunder storm as such, but I do remember in the early 90's a major hail storm came in from the SE and did a lot of damage in Rangiora to car roofs, guttering and glasshousesStorm Struck wrote: Thu 26/12/2024 14:02

Yea growing up the NE was always the source of that chilly sea breeze. It was always a surprise to see rain or storm come from that direction.
How are the sea surface temperatures at the moment?

In Christchurch for part of the day. approaching the city about midday, there was a dark wall of cloud to the east/northeast and then some heavy rain with big raindrops for a time. Didn’t notice any thunder or lightning.

Chased from Ngatea to Matamata, continuous thunder under those storms. Very intense rain, small hail and gusty winds observed under a storm near Hobbiton. Two funnel clouds seen.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
The storm that the MS issued a warming on that moved towards Oxford must have delivered some intense rainfall, the Ashley river was carrying quite a bit of water today when I went over it
