Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
A Tasman Sea low is set to bring unsettled weather with some thunderstorm activity to NZ during this period. For many in the north and east of NZ showers/rain arrive late on Xmas Day.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Thunderstorm risk crossing and converging with that frontal zone through South and mid Canterbury tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Perhaps with that band in mind could see a sneaky cell into the city.
Will definitely be an arm chair chase with lots of wonderful christmas kai.
Boxing day has a risk although not great, but could be some rumbles in the afternoon in the heavy showers/ small hail.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Yes thunder activity for both north and south island tomorrow afternoon and evening. If storms develop tomorrow I'm still chasing despite Xmas things on.. I'm sure the family won't mind (knowing what I'm like)

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
A possible chase for me will be Taupo to Bay of Plenty on Boxing Day but I would have to leave early due to holiday traffic.
For Auckland skies I will keep a watch on later tomorrow through to Boxing Day morning, the southwester will push thunderstorm risk away from Auckland by afternoon Boxing Day but as always it is best to see how things look on the day.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Merry Christmas to all.
Tomorrow morning/ midday afternoon looks good for thunder for northland and waikato before diminishing as you mentioned Spwill.
Today's thunder risk for Canterbury is going to be a day where we just wait and see, it looks messy but their is a chance something could fire inland. Will watch the radars through Xmas lunch. Unfortunately tomorrow looks like the weather will be cooler and showery which might affect the annual ramp race derby at woodfordglen tomorrow night

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Two severe warned thunderstorms out from Met Service, probably what you can hear Richard.
Not very often we see storms moving from north to South, just the movement of the front and convergences.

No the one to my west is not the one the MS are calling, that one is quite active now. But there's another coming from the north that should come closeStorm Struck wrote: Wed 25/12/2024 15:36 Two severe warned thunderstorms out from Met Service, probably what you can hear Richard.

Heard a peal of thunder around 2:30pm at Methven but was not in a position to check it out further
In Ashburton now: 20.4°C, 62% humidity, 996.6 hPa, overcast. Gentle south-easterly.
Merry Christmas, everyone.

Hearing 'dumps' of thunder from the north-west at the moment.
Methven Spy reports thunder and rain there.

Merry Christmas.
yes, Can hear distant Thunder to the North/Northwest here in Ashburton. Looks like big storm out by the Rakaia river.

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Looks like a decent downpour coming in towards Christchurch from the SE, some red and purple on the radar.
Quite humid this morning and on 20C with a breezy SW, slightly warmer than what I thought it might be.
Keep an eye on that band could be some lightning when it arrives.

Dry so far but looks to be a good spell of most welcome watering of the garden coming in off Pegasus Bay soon

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Hmm yeah it is very humid this morning and the atmosphere does look unstable. Would be unusual to get a storm from SE but the radar looks ominous

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
My lightning app which is average is picking some strikes offshore, latest radar loops suggest there is hail in there too.

Re: General December Weather
Very active looking thunderstorm line now approaching Banks Peninsula and potentially Chch from the NE. Quite an unusual set up

Re: Xmas Day/Boxing Day weather
Surprised this isnt severe warned given the radar signature it's showing, will definitely cause some surface flooding.
Can see the TCU towers now and a very dark line on the horizon to the SE.
