Easterlies

Unread post by NZstorm »

Looks like we are in for a period of moist easterlies which will keep the weather cloudy and damp in the east. Significant rainfall looks to be on the way for Gisborne/Hawkes Bay this week.

Looks to be enough low level instability for Isolated afternoon convergence showers for Auckland next 2-3 days. :)

The heavy rain on the way for the East of the North Island will not be good news for all those friut growers still to harvest.

May be one or two heavy afternoon showers on the way for central and Western parts of the North Island from Tuesday.

Easterly quarter, maybe SE. But no Southwesters.

How much precip we get over the NI this week will depend on just how close the low gets to NZ.

Met Service forecast for Auckland today was for fine weather. But its quite cloudy here and the ingredients are there for a few afternoon convergence showers. Got a few spots of rain here now. :)

Cloudy and damp in the east - yes, but the east of the North island, not the South Island. (unless the low suddenly decides to move more southwest) Though moist easterlies can easily give drizzle to coastal Canterbury, eg today, we had some slight drizzle in late morning out on Banks Peninsula - insignificant stuff, but still unexpected.

Excellent photo of the sea breeze front/convergence zone.

Should get another cloudy day today with chance of showers. I would forget fine weather from this High (for Auckland). Air is too moist and unstable at lower levels.

This low will be interesting to see where it tracks, GFS has it right over the NI on Thursday morning

at 4 pm Tue 15 March

Auckland (Airport)

Temperature: 22 °C
Wind Speed: 24 km/h
Wind Direction: WSW

Hottest in NZ atm @ 26c here with low humidity :D

Tomorrow night looks like there's heavy rain with southerlies on the way for the Northern NI as the low appraches.
Friday afternoon looks good for intense convectional showers, mainly inland. :)

Yes, Foggy, you are correct about the SW'ester. But it is the sea breeze effect.

Looks like most of the rain will be in Gisborne/HB. Its hard to say how much precipitation we will get in Auckland, I guess it will depend on how much humidity can jump the ranges. Should in the main be dry. Isolated thunderstorms possible from later in the week over Waikato/Auckland regions giving localised heavy falls.

Looks to be isolated cb's in the Gisborne area today.

GFS now has most of the rain falling NE offshore Coromandel on Thurs morning, then the system weakens. East coast farmers will be loving all this rain ;)

Michael, we need rain! :P
