Waterspouts reported in Akaroa Harbour, Thursday 10th.

Unread post by tich »

Nothing compared to the Greymouth tornado, but I've just heard that someone witnessed some waterspouts in Robinson's Bay, near the head of Akaroa Harbour during the cold southerly blast of Thursday night. Such events don't seem to be very common out on Banks Peninsula, though I recall there was an actual tornado at Barry's Bay in November 1994, which started off as a waterspout, and damaged some trees as it moved onto land.

Quite possible those waterspouts would of occured, this combined with the winds that wrecked the windpower thing in the Gebbies Pass.Ben, plus the fact that there could of been other tornadoic activity on the West Coast as well as the F2 tornado that shattered Greymouth.
There have been various reports of waterspouts off Canterbury over the past 10years or so possibly even further thanthat with various cold fronts that have come through.
Whether they have been associated with CB/Thunder activity, I don't know

I don't believe there was any thunderstorm activity on Banks Peninsula on Thursday night, though like Chch, the cold blast contained quite heavy rain (maybe some localised hail?) and very strong southerlies for a time.

Editing note: Dates confusion - Thursday 10th instead of Friday 11th
