one hell of a storm has just passed through Waihi Beach, Tauranga, Te puke, Paeangoroa and now currently hitting Kawerau - complete with one hell of a electrical storm, torrential downpour and multi tornadoes...
Looks like the Eastern Bop is going to cop it bad as the storm is moving southeast by east - be warned !!!!!
lots of roads and highways now blocked around the Kawerau area - trees down, roofs blown off, petrol tanker vrs car outside the Kawerau Mill, etc etc

Rahh!!!! Someone please be covering this!! The news will I guess tonight, but if you guy's like NZstorm and Spwill are that'll make it much better!
Well I'm glad I said something earlier
, the chances were better for something happening today then other days. Looks like it's occured in the late morning period and a bit further east than I thought. Still, I maintain that if something forms in the Waikato this afternoon there could be something. The shear pattern is quite good for today.
Hope people out there are allright..
Amazing stuff, that is a big Cb there C-nimbus! A supercell!!!

Haha, thanks C-nimbus.
To be honest though I got things slightly wrong. I keep trying to narrow things down and BOP was a little out of the range where I thought things would be. Still, it's more of a likely day than others. But the risk remains if storms develop this afternoon from Northland to Waikato/central North Island I think.

Report on NewstalkZB of roofs being lifted from several buildings. Forgot exact location.
Yes well done to Aaron for his tornado forecast. I almost made the same comment. This is a typical tornado situation for the Bay of Plenty. The onshore low level NE sets up a great shear situation for them. Also a report of 70mm rain in an hour near Tauranga.
Thunderstorm risk has subdided for Auckland/Waikato for now. We will need to see a feature come in off the Tasman sea to act as a trigger.

Tornado hits Kawerau
Mar 25, 2005
A tornado has ripped through Kawerau and across to Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty, leaving a trail of destruction.
The police say they began receiving calls from residents in the area shortly before 10am.
Trees and power poles have been brought down, and a roof has been lifted off a house along State Highway Two at Pongakawa, south-east of Te Puke.
The manager of the Pongokawa BP station, Norman Mowbray says a family had windows blown out of their vehicles and others reported serious damage.
The police say trees are down across State Highway 30 at Thornton, and there is surface flooding on the Kaimai Ranges. Drivers are being urged to take extreme care.

yes! I've been viwing the metstrike map to help check the detector, but its hopeless now lol
re how live the detector.. the data is uploaded every minute or so and more often to the weather-display-live files, so should be pretty up-to-date...
I did notice today though with the decent storm that the storm location system was adjusting strikes back to be closer than they should have been... I restarted NexStorm a few times which forced it to re-calculate.. possibly it was because the storm was increasing intensity as it moved away so, for the detector, the movement seemed slower? It also seemed to be ignoring any activity away from the main storm centre, perhaps it was a bit much data for the machine to deal with lol
