great image there foggy, with all that warm air being funnelled down from the tropics (it is quite mild today too) and mixing with the colder air should make it a real doozey.
I was down your way on the weekend foggy doing some music with freinds, and i must say there is something about the waikato at this time of year (I am an ex hamiltonian, was there from 1988 - 2001). Saturday was just outstanding and the air is so fresh and exhilarating. I remember trout fishing in the river of all places in June/July on those crisp and frosty anticyclonic mornings......beauty!!
Auckland does have an appeal to on days like that, but its just not in the same league as the Wakatoo!

Awesome pics. You guys must have amazing tripods...
I have to concede that snow definitely appears to be on the agenda down here. Maybe we'll see a winter afterall.
Update: snow much less likely now, as the cloud level has risen significantly.
It's now just a high, thin layer, which was sent over by those envious Aussies to prevent us viewing the comet impact tonight.
Aussies and those damn Aliens.

heavy rain warning issues from 2 nite for northland/coromandel
maybe though the low might have peaked too early, and will just become a weakening cut off low...
but its those cut off lows that can be quite dangerous, especilay as the fronts can be become slow moving
rain is showing on the rain radar to the west of northland , now
the cloud sheet with that front goes all the way to Queensland, so lots of cloud to keep coming down and activate and keep the whole thing fuelled
Severe Weather Watch
SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR AUCKLAND
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1058hrs 04-Jul-2005
HEAVY RAIN POSSIBLE ABOUT AUCKLAND LATER TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY
MetService is keeping an eye on a frontal band in the Tasman Sea
which is expected to move onto the northern North Island on Tuesday.
A strong moist northeasterly flow precedes the front, and this should
bring bands of heavy rain onto the northern part of the North Island
on Tuesday, Wednesday and possibly Thursday.
In Auckland, rain is expected to develop today, then become more
persistent and heavier during Tuesday. Heavy rain may persist into
Wednesday. At this stage forecasters are unsure of the duration and
intensity of the heavy rain, however it is possible some parts of
Greater Auckland may recieve over 100mm of rain in a 24 to 36 hour
hour period from Tuesday afternoon through into Wednesday evening.
Some heavy rain may even continue into Thursday.

heres the 6am radar as brian mentioned.
it certainly looks to be packing a punch. I would have thought that t/s are a definate possibility today, and it also seems to have a very defined edge.
tracker is picking up strikes way up north.
also attached is 6am sat image showing the devlopement (or possibly decay) of the low centre

any rain or cloud systems around now look disorganised and weak now...
looks like the high is winning...
but need to watch out for a wave down the front...
edit
i dont think we shoudl brush it off just yet though, this rain band....will be prudent for people to keep an eye out..
update: there is now a larger area of rain slowly moving south, that the auckland area is line to get...on the latest rain radar....sometime in the very early hours of the morning

Actually, fingers crossed, it would take a more serious event than we experienced in late May to flood us now. I've seriously reduced waters ability to pool by cutting the neighbours retaining wall off at ground level. Fingers crossed it will be successful. It doesn't stop me feeling for our other neighbours though.

This certainly doesn't surprise me brian, i think we could all see this coming from some time last week! and its like you said in an earlier post, this type of low is so unpredictable
I see on the 6am radar the thick blue area that the Brynderwyns are under, looks very messy and i can expect to hear reports of road slips and possible closures today (I work in civil, so I get to hear these things).
I just hope that we dont see another repeat of the TGA floods up north with this one, could get real messy
