Just to change the subject and start a new thread, it looks as though it may become cooler from Wednesday over much of the country before a large anticyclone hits.
Lets hope there is a thunderstrom to welcome the arrival of the cooler weather
Well it has definitely changed here - very rugged night with strong wnw winds and 19mm rain. Very cool - I have a reading of 12.2 - no thunderstorms and hail though so far. Patches of blue sky and sun so maybe it will improve through the day

Thats the second winter spell this month down there. Southern oceans look very cold and unstable but most of the cold showery weather will pass south of the SI unlike the last cold outbreak. Invercargill will get an wintry day though with squally showers.
Should end up being a typically dry January over much of the country apart from the south and west of the South Island.
I would hardly call this winter - doesn't feel like June-July to me.
Perhaps, but it looks like winter as far as the upper air soundings go.
Thickness around 5300, freezing level around 1000m. I don't remember many days with the atmosphere that cold last June/July.
Certainly has got cooler today out here near Akaroa after the southerly arrived about midday. And now, suprisingly (not forecast at all), it's been raining quite heavily here for about the last hour.
Also unforecast were the northeasterly gales we got last night - not the sort of strength we usually get that direction ; especially since the wind has essentially been a 'sea-breeze' type of wind.
Yes Ben, it was nice and sunny this morning but during the day it gradually clouded over with winds between south and east here.
A few convergence lines developed as a result but nothing there to trigger anything further than that. Quite a cool southerly out at West Melton but NE back here at home. Interesting to note the airplanes variating their takeoffs/landings between the south and NE
I notice a few lightning strikes out to the SE on Steven Graham's lightning detector although I haven't picked up any sfericals.
I still have a 3 out for Wednesday despite the preceding NW prior to the front.
Warm sunny conditions for crossing Strait, though typically very strong NW winds off Karori Rock/Terawhiti - surprises many on the ferries. Nice afternoon in Picton with much cooler southerly air arriving about 7PM, still dry with harmless cloud.
Dewpoints down to 9C this morn from the 17C of late, feels very fresh.
Temp currently 16C.
Looks like cool to cold weather will sweep the country around thursday and the North should get it's first widespread fall of rain of the year.
Sudden cool southerly change this morning in Chch; must've dropped about 10C when it came through (from about 26C down to 16C at Hillmorton). Clouded over with some spitting rain for a while, but nothing much. Wind is still fresh, but nowhere near as strong as the northwetserly gales we had overnight.
I'll be over on the West Coast for much of tomorrow and Friday - looks like a fine spell over there, something I don't think they've had much so far this month.

Hasn't reached northern SI yet. Left Picton this morning in light rain. Cloudy in Blenheim but overhead sky cleared enough to let in sun at about 70% of clear sky radiation, I would guess - started to feel hot sitting outside. Good demonstration of NW rainshadow - heavy clouds and rain on hills to west and north. Still showers over Picton and Sounds. Winds were light to moderate in Picton and Blenheim, nothing strong experienced except no doubt in the outer Sounds.

At this time of year it would be the best part (the backside of the front with the coolness) unless it blows back in the easterly..very rare.Otherwise the SW gale will blow the moisture out again.Only some drizzel here SW now strong.

Overnight light rain cleared here (Picton). Partly cloudy by noon with some sun but more persistent cloud around hills. Sunny for an afternoon drive to eastern seabord and Wairau plains, then straight back into cloud buildups and light showers in southern Sounds. Now sunny with clouds dissipating rapidly. Nice to have avoided strong winds completely over the last 4 days.
