I'm on my way down Easter weekend... Anybody got a long range forecast for that Saturday and Sunday (15th and 16th Apr) for Wanaka? I'm only going to one of the 2 days, would like to know which one will have better weather! I'm a plane buff too!
p.s only going because of the F111s and Hawker Hunter!

we might be getting into a weekly pattern of unsettled weekends....
the weekend before easter will have a beefy low cross NZ
and then a high is lurking,....but a week later might see the next unsettled patch?
There's also training day on Good Friday which is also interesting to watch went to the 2000 airshow it's very well done and much worth your money possibly going this year too.
Cheers
Jason.

See you down ther along with Aaron and Steven!
Sounds GREAT! Aaron's got my cell number, text me or look out for the Coke Van and we'll catch up!
YAY! Great! I was at home Wednesday, when I heard the beautiful sound of a Packard Merlin approaching... I ran outside to see a cadillac of the sky fly right over the top, the 12 piece symphony purring as the silver beast slid overhead...
I went back inside again.
Sorry, I tend to get a bit carried away when it comes to aircraft... I dunno what I like more, aircraft, lightning, or rugby!!! Wait till I describe the sound of freedom when two F111s scream over at Wanaka!
Weather outlook for Otago so far from fencepost.
Looks ok.
My thoughts,
E/NE will take moisture inland and the cooling nights will turn that moisture into fog and low cloud in the Valleys clearing in the afternoons. still early days though.
Yes that war plane went over my head on Wednesday too Andrew Love the sound of a good engine such as those.
My favourite is the Spitfire which is the only one of it's kind replica in NZ of which my dad helped with the maintenance to when it was being rebuilt.
Here are some Hot favourites you are likly to see at the 2006 Warbirds over Wanaka under performance.
Hawker Hurricane P3351.
A4 Skyhawkes.
Mk XVI Spitfire.
Helicoper's two of which are Bk 117s.
DH82 Tiger moth
Catalina .
Polikarpov Biplanes
Mustangs.
Hercules .
Black Falcons .
Beriot XL- A very special plane built in 1918 to be rebuilt in the early 1990's a must see much like the Wright brothers plane.
And plenty more planes and tricks which include sky and ground battles using real explosions and fun air manovers really gets the adrenaline going worth the money.
Iam going if we can a motel only few left .
Cheers
Jason.
Other than aeroplane engines
As far as an engine goes, I love the sound of a "Hog" - the DG locomotive, especially from Notch 7 onwards up to the ultimate of Notch10 when working hard...but the are only heard on the Weka Pass Railway these days's.
Norton Commandos have a a good sound as do Triumph motocycles.
Harley-Davidson motocycles would sound good too if they weren't so much Americanized.

I remember them as Black-grey engines, lots of smoke and a distinctive smell you never forget and red carriges with people in them and rust red wooden wagons with cattle in them

Apparently the first regular steam train service since steam went out of regular operation in 1970,except fot the Kingston Flyer.

Steam locomotives in this day and age should be regarded as a envoirement issue especially with global warming, whatever.
They were filthy.
Now days however, they are much better looked after, thanks to Mr Welsh and his team but they still quirt filthy smoke out into our atmosphere. An electric steam lcomotive would be more envoirement friendly rather than a solid fuel/liquid fuel fed locomotive. Only thing out of the funnel would be hot air or steam plumes
I can remember taking a train journey from Invercargill to Ch'ch in 1967 - somewhere in the tunnels on the North Otago coast a lot of smoke blew back into part of our carriage - gave me an instant attack of asthma, most unpleasant. And as a heavyish smoker at the time it wasn't as if sucking alien gunk into my lungs was new to me...the journey continued with a millpond-like ferry trip from Lyttelton to W'gton on the late lamented Wahine (this was in an anticyclonic July in a cool dry winter, though really a cool SW May and a sunny frosty June-July - major dryness in the east of the SI that year). Continued back into discomfort by taking a non-sleeper carriage train trip overnight to Auckland - naturally when stopped for a while at Waiouru a window wouldn't shut, and the night air was pretty cold. I was heading for the US to study by the cheapest reasonable means - the tub that crossed the Pacific broke down a couple of times. Ah, the nostalgia!

Yes there are lots of memories from the days associated with the steam locmotive drawn train.
The Mihiwaka tunnel north of Dunedin was notorious for smoke, cinders whatsoever from the Ja locomotive as it was in full power climbing the 1 in 50 grade with the "South Island Limited" No 144 of about 350 tons in tow.
What funny warbirds Trains are I don't think Iv'e seen one of them fly before but then again there is the Kingston FLYer .
Of course this being irrelivant to the actual topic .
Oh yeh I changed th topic my bad.

Sorry Mate, no Skyhawks, Helen dealt to them, and no Black Falcons, they were the Airmacchis, Helen dealt to them too... The highlights I think will be the RAAF F111s and the Hawker Hunter, with Jurgis Karys (Mad Lithuanian) too... I've been to Wanaka 5 times now... try http://www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com

This will be my second Warbirds over Wanaka (went to the last one) I have been to two of the airshows at Omaka. Also went to Wings and Wings (at Wigram) twice before that finished and to the VJ Airshow at Wigram also.
Favourite ever plane I have seen flying would go the the Sopwith Camel and CA-13 BOOMERANG.
