Thanks, folks. I'd noticed the big drops on my webcam pictures so I thought I'd try to get a photo of one in flight. I took a lot of shots and was surprised to see the line of little drops that often followed the big one
Looks even more bizarre if you turn it upside down

That was taken with a Canon 24-105mm f/4 IS at 105mm from about 0.7m away. It was then cropped to about 40% of the frame.
