Surprisingly a nor'wester hit here in Christchurch today...It was a gentle breeze with nor'west arch in full bloom and a temp of 17 degrees...very nice!

Looks to be a classic winters evening here, clear overnight then with showers and SW cloud likely tomorrow will it get past 13°.
As for winter it officially doesnt end untill the 23 September
I believe most of the world recognise the change of seasons on the 21st or 22nd but I believe that Spring from the 23rd of September onwards just seems somewhat farcical here in Canterbury...of course, there will be wintry spells but average daily highs for September in Chch are basically 15 degrees which is 5 degrees higher than July
Given our changeable maritime climate I think it's all rather arbitrary. A visiting meteorologist from ?Japan described NZ as having a "permanent unsettled spring", or something like that. It's not as if there is a return to growth after winter starkness to mark it - it's not hard to tell in say Chicago, or Harbin which shifts from -19C mean in January to 23C mean in July.

Today the SW that we always get with that scum that rolls in from the tasman each high that remains stationary off the NW tip of the country, well it must mean its fine in the other 95% of the country

Do you mind the complaining? This forum is for discussion.. and after years of trying to tell you this it's getting rather annoying. Put these posts in the Auckland blog otherwise they risk deletion.
Move. Sheesh!
Yes, as Brian says there is not much low cloud from this high.
Well, it is fine and dry here, very clear today. Expect it to be that way most of the time thru' Friday. An unusual feature here has been the well above average sunshine in a very wet winter - this rarely happens.
beautiful day here in Christchurch.
must have got too around 20C today not too sure ill have to watch the weather but it was a very nice day.
Took a stroll out to the beach today, very nice.
Spring has definatly almost sprung .
Another warm one today 20C should get those plants blooming into life.
Looks like we are set to have quite a few of these mild days ahead although next week there might be a few SW changes inbetween NWer's.
So hopefully less frosts and more sunshine.
Still abit of snow on Banks Peninnsula too from last Monday nights snow.
Cheers
Jason.
And fine and mild again today. Now guaranteed to have either our 3rd sunniest or 2nd sunniest winter - despite the exceptionally high rainfall total. There have been many more clear bright days than usual, and fewer "spoilers" with cloudy N-NW air flowing down the coast from the Taranaki bight direction.
This has been more than enough to offset the sun loss during the wet events. So while I'm glad that I don't live on a property vulnerable to flooding, I don't consider that it has been a bad winter at all.
dreary windswept miserable place the past couple of days, despite forecasts of much better.
I don't think its been that bad but this was forecast by this forum at the weekend.
The cloudy breezy SW will keep tonights overnight minimum up around 12C.
and it could be like this from now to xmas if an el nino develops
I still remember the El Nino springs of 1991 and 1997, overcast, windy and cold every day upto Xmas. I think I have those years correct.
I think that's an exaggeration as far as sun goes, at least. The only site around Auckland with records covering both those years and with reasonably long records is at Mangere.
1991 Sep 157 hrs Oct 208 Nov 213 Dec 196
1997 Sep 130 Oct 189 Nov 193 Dec 203
Approx. averages for site over its period of record:
Mean: Sep 151 Oct 180 Nov 196 Dec 212
(The NIWA normals for 1971-2000 are in fact a small amount lower)
You're living in NZ, not in some sun-zone. Accept it!
Apart from this afternoon (clouded over with cool SW) the weather has been very nice here since Friday, even some Lightning sat night so no complaints from me.
