Hi
it was on the news (tv1 and tv3) saturday night
the original lighthouse was situated further SW, near the cliff edge....cliff erosion meant it had to be relocated further inland...and a concrete base was built at that time....then in 1986 the cliff erosion caught up with the new location and threatened to topple the lighthouse over the edge....so it was dismantled and stored in a farmers paddock (the dome)
the cliffs are eroding inland here at 0.7m a year!
(they are 500 feet high in places....will have to pick a nice day for a auckland weather enthusiast meet to look over the edge ...its a great sight!
there is still a flashing light on the north head (nine pin rock)
do you see where it says on the sign to be wary of lightning ?
also there is another sign mentioning windspeed recording at the site of 115 knots (215kmh!), by the Munro anenometer that was part of the signal station (now replaced by a nowcasting station on top of the roof (you can just make it out on one of the aerials)
nearly 900 feet up the lighthouse is, great views
