April quite dry

Unread post by Willoughby »

Only 10mm here so far. Where is our next lot of rain going to come from? All the models show a blocking high.. notice the interannual convection has decreased a lot in the southwestern Pacific (Fiji region) over the last month.
Long high pressure cell ranging all the way from WA Aus to the mid-Atlantic at the moment.
Though an amplifying low to the SW of Australia looks set to bring some southwesterly weather to NZ at some stage soon.. not very good for rain chances!

Said that, stunning day here with sunny southeasterlies. :D
Maybe a frost sometime soon.. haven't had one this year yet!
Waiouru and Taupo both registered frosts today.

I wouldnt say that Canterbury is dry over a wide scale with some localised areas recieving perhaps more rainfall than others.
Since April 1st we have had up to 38mm most of that falling over the easter wekend when there was some heavy rain i believe overnight on Good friday.
Cheers
Jason.

If the models stay correct with the prognostic of no significant rain.. we could have a record dry month!

How much has Auckland had so far this month?

Cloudy change today.. might even be some drizzle later this evening.

Looking at Metservice's reading - only 18.2mm recorded so far at Auckland Airport this month.

Tawa seems to be having a bob each way in the monthly stakes - drier than last year, wetter than 2005.
But the year to date is definitely drier.

Some stats for Tawa:
rainfall to 21 April 2007: 35 mm, YTD 147 mm
to 21 April 2006: 51 mm, YTD 269 mm
to 21 April 2005: 11 mm, YTD 211 mm
