Bolts from the Blue

Unread post by NZstorm »

Interesting story from the Miami Herald today on 'bolts from the Blue'

A particularly dangerous form of lightning which comes from a distant storm.

interesting stuff!
so does it mean you are not going to get struck by one of these positively charged clear air bolts if you are under a wall cloud looking up with your jaw dropping?
;) :D

Has this been known to occur in NZ?

I would say its only going to occur with one of those very electricly charged supercells that you get in the USA (i.e when they get those very high CAPE values over over 4000)

It cartainly can and I'm sure does happen in NZ. Our low incidence of thunderstorms means not often though.

Man, you said it...last week when I was getting the detectors ready to go online there was a ton of lightning happening around the place, mostly out to sea, but now that the pages are up-and-running the lightning has all-but vanished. Oh well, I'll use the downtime to do some more work on the site... :?

That photo that spwill took a couple of months back likely fits this category. I'm sure 'bolts from the blue' originate from the top of the top of the cb.

Thanks - I had missed that one posted in the Herald, fantastic shot and it reminds me of one in the Stormchasers thread here in the US going through several layers before earthing out.

The lightning in the above photo started very high in the cloud (atleast 10,000m) making it look much closer than it was, Tstorm was near Great Barrier Island so a huge Lightning bolt. :)

You don't see many of those in Auckland.
