Wouldn't have lasted long (the snow). Very different further north - in east central Brazil where I am temps are above normal - about 27C yesterday, and today is the 18th consecutive sunny day - virtually no clouds at all over that timespan. Further north still in the well-known hotspot of Teresina the normal 36C daily maxs. are occurring.

The 3pm temp in Buenos Aires was 1.8C. A 3pm temp that low would very rarely be seen in Invercargill or Dunedin.
Hence a particularly odd weather event for a sea level location at lat 34 deg. Being continental location does make it possible though while such a cold event would be impossible in Auckland.

Ahem...I clearly remember a very foggy day in 1994 when the midday temperature was reported as 0 °C in downtown Auckland.NZstorm wrote:...such a cold event would be impossible in Auckland.
'Twas a damp and misty day. How accurate that temperature is, I can't say, since it's from the usual reliable sources (the weather clairvoyants employed by radio and TV stations, etc), but it was darn cold for Auckland.

It didn't happen. We did have some cold winters in the mid 1990's but nothing like 0C at midday.I clearly remember a very foggy day in 1994 when the midday temperature was reported as 0 °C in downtown Auckland

Re: First snow in Buenos Aries since 1918
It was pretty cold but I have no way of knowing how cold it really was. The radio stations were saying it was 0 °C in downtown Auckland at lunchtime.NZstorm wrote:I was questioning the authenticity of the observation.
I happened to be near Victoria Park and there was a very thick fog hanging around at the time, which didn't begin to burn off until well after midday.
It wouldn't surprise me if they plucked that number from out of thin air, or got it from a friend of a cousin of a guy they knew who worked with a lady who once met some dude who sold a set of tyres to Jim Hickey's ex-neighbour's panelbeater in 1992. So who are we to argue with that?
It was really cold though for midday Auckland.

I think to get snow in Auckland you would need clearing showers from the SW meeting Southerly air straight up from the south pole in a very strong flow.
Looks like BA gets the cold air but is very rain shadow.
BA last got proper snow 90 years ago; Central Auckland about 70 years ago I believe
I believe BA had snow on July 10, 07.

Can you imagine the chaos if Auckland received heavy snow?spwill wrote:I think to get snow in Auckland you would need clearing showers from the SW meeting Southerly air straight up from the south pole in a very strong flow.

BA also got snow in 1973 according to the local Met Office there.

I suspect it may have been a warm advection type event in BA last week, with such a low afternoon temp. The city's climate is more continental than Auckland, but much less so than many similar latitude places in the northern hemisphere, and it lies on the coast. The terrain I believe is pretty flat for 100s of km inland.

That's right. Further north Rio has been having hot weather for the PanAmerican games. The 3 weeks and couple of days I was in eastern Brazil had 24-31C maxs and 14-20C lows. Perfect conditions.
