Was just outside...getting the cat in for the night...saw a "shooting star" off to the WNW/NW sky for about a second..THROUGH THE OVERCAST SKY/FOG, no less...and a couple secs later "POP" like a gunshot....KEWL!!!
NOT like the one we had last year, but cool nonetheless...
EDIT: What organisation (if any) would I report this to?
EDIT 2: As a follow up I did call the Mt John Observatory and reported it to them...He was quite nice, took down all the details and did some explaining to me...quite a neat experience...time for bed!
I reported a vivid, spectacular 'Shooting Star' (I suppose Atronomical people hate the word 'shootingstar' just like how we hate the term - mini tornadoes)event to the Canterbury Astronomical soc about 6 months ago and basically the guy at the end of the telephone wasn't all that interested.
It sounded as though he has just gone through a recent divorce???
from that, what a waste of time reporting something like this.
I'm glad that you found someone that was interested.
