Taupo hydro system has record high water levels so they will be running that system for all its worth to keep the South Island in power untill the spring recovery occurs down there at Tekapo.

....so that means, if went up into the Cook Strait and cut the cable, the South Island would float away instead of the North Island??

The North Island has been supplying the South Island for quite a while from the thermal stations, about 2 days ago, the load was balanced between both Islands and the cable could be taken out of service if required.
