A boquet to the Metsservice...I've often criticised them for underperformance during severe events, but I see their overloading page at least shows the short forecast today. Still a shame their site can't cope with the traffic when no doubt there are horticulturalists and farmers who would really like to see the detailed maps etc...

It was pretty cold this morning. I reckon the snowline was around 350m? Winds picking up again and it's still cold, 4.5°C at the moment. Patches of blue through the upper level clouds, sun breaking through at times, and no precipitation all morning.

The change arrived around 6am bringing showers with it and strong gusty SW wind, looks to be on the clear out there now which in a way is good.
Also looks like a few thundery showers around North Otago,South Canterbury throwing out a few strikes in the last 30 minutes or so.
Not surprised to hear about the snow down south this morning, great stuff bring us some photo's please.
Cheers
Jason.

Looking very unstable now CU forms towering up all over the place with dark bases and a few showers developing.
The clouds are really swirling quite fast sort of going South against Westerly I believe of which the wind now is.
Few strikes on the tracker abit further south, something tells me we might see some good hail showers later on and maybe some thunder.
Cheers
Jason.

Had a station record low barometer last night of 970.9 hpa. Looking very black to the south at the moment. Could be in for some more rain I think. :D

Just starting to blow really hard out from the SW here in Riccarton, looks like the shower activity might be heading away from us out to sea and over the peninsula, as predicted by metservice

I sure have been impressed with the height of the clouds today incrediable, no precipitation here yet.

Chilly 6.5C at Jeff's station - unseasonable considering the sun is shining. Dark clouds about this afternoon, but only a few spits so far in central Chch. Timaru, by contrast apparently got alot of hail earlier in afternoon - reported as snow by some Trademe posters, not suprising as it was only 4C at 1pm there.

From stuff.co.nz:

A suspected tornado has ripped through the Christchurch suburb of Parklands.

The twister has knocked over trees and ripped down fences on Queenspark Drive.

Residents heard a loud noise about 3pm and rushed out to see the damage.

One eyewitness said he heard a loud noise and thought the walls of his house would be blown in.

No-one was hurt but there were numerous reports of damage.

The lower clouds were 'very rotary' around that time too out here at West Melton, but nothing came of it, sadly or good depending on which way you look at it. :(
