Moving to Melbourne in May or June..

Unread post by Ryan Thomas »

I'm moving there with my 2 best mates, one has a sister and a brother there and they will help us find a flat, we will all secure jobs before we move over.. Staying there till Nov or Dec then heading to Brisbane. My OE has begun... Anybody have facts about Melbourne or know of any good places near it to visit. And can I experience some interesting weather events?

I wouldn't call Australia much of an 'OE', but each to their own. :B I've never been to Melbourne but look to be going on Feb 6 for the cricket. It almost tops the ranks in liveable cities alongside Vancouver, Vienna, Perth and Toronto so it must be a great city.

About the same rainfall as Christchurch (water shortage there), weather can turn very cool with showery southwesterlies right off the sea, I'd think the weather is a bit more interesting in Christchurch with occasional snow fall in winter, but the gale warm northerlies in Melbourne could be as interesting as a good Canterbury NW blow? Not sure lol.

Wow, Ryan moving from Melbourne to Brisbane in Nov or Dec means you are going to melt!

Be aware it's hard to get decent employment after about September as the employers are reluctant to hire just before Christmas (and have to pay out public holiday leave over that period). The bulk of the Australian holidays are from early October to late January.

It's a river city, not unlike Christchurch in some ways. Love the trams. Can get extremely hot and extremely cold too, often with very quick changes. But I've only been there a couple of times for very short visits.
