A major earthquake struck near Tonga this morn. The preliminary measure is mag 7.9. A tsunami warning was issued for Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. The epicenter was located 210 km SSE of the capitol. The submarine volcano, which has been exploding for several days now, is just 12 km from the capitol. The quake is not directly connected with the eruption, but it could certainly influence the behaviour it!

Nice Photo Gallery here of the eruption from the New York Times.

was out at muriwai and piha today on a field trip and lol and on our way out on the radio we hear the threat of a tsunami. Was a bit of excitment when we heard this hahahaa. Although if there was one we all new it would not be big as we were on the wrong side but there still would have some sea level rise.
