Heard on 1ZB that Napier city council is having a reading for TV taken in the city centre although the serious stuff is still done at the airport

In the Herald for the 6th Jan:
Low temperature reports may be bad for tourism, says mayor
Napier's mayor says Hawke's Bay tourism may be getting hurt by temperature readings broadcast on television which locals claim are much lower than reality.

Frankly I'm glad mayors and other such businessmen aren't controlling metservices...every day would be listed as fine!jeffsweather wrote:In the Herald for the 6th Jan:

I do agree that the readings are grotesqely inaccurate. Omarama is always lumped in with Oamaru and Timaru, even though our weather has been nothing like that of those two places. We'll be shown as having a high of 23 (when it in fact hit 30+) or a low of 9 (when in fact it may actually have been -2.4).
If I was to claim that I'd discovered Jupiter to be a moon of Mercury, the astronomical community would have me exiled to Mars (which is actually a satellite of Pluto), yet the metservice staff make a living out of inaccuracy, it appears.
If we amateurs can get it right, why can't the professionals? Or why don't they send us their paychecks?

Most people think the highest temp is the best place
Omarama should be in the Alexandra type forecast...
What is 2003QB then? or These comets were supossed to see in May are asteroids or planetestimals
