which will be due to the stuck long wave patterns we have had for a few months..i.e cool SW winds in the NZ area turning to warmer NW winds half way to south america
a similar warmer area in the western tasman has been drifitng closer to the NI over the last week....and is coming ashore now
this area of warmer than normal water in the pacific is drifting east as well, and will eventually go up the humboldt current up the chile coast
will this then eventually re inforce the el nino warming in the equator area?
i.e a feedback mechanism that makes el nino periods strengthen and last a long time? (i.e the stuck long wave patterns to the east of NZ that caused this warmer than normal water was a result of a developing el nino pattern in the first place (less big highs to the east of NZ, more to the west of NZ
Large area of warm water in middle south pacific

Man, this is sickening talk about major slows on this internet and loading pages on this site, anyway rant out of the way.Manukau heads observer wrote:a similar warmer area in the western tasman has been drifitng closer to the NI over the last week....and is coming ashore now
Yea!!! noticed that... back in the days we called them thermals (smooth appearance on ocean surface, though I might be wrong and am happy to be corrected technically regarging the right term ) actually observed and noted this on Wednesday, out here in the bay the water was so flat... not ripple... talk about mirror reflection... took a partial photo of it because it intrigued me.
I'll go hunt it down and upload it later.

Here we go...
Looking North over Doubtless Bay on the 10th Dec 2009 @ 09.32am exactly - what I observed was the smooth glassy area of water moving from the open water of the Pacific into the Bay... unfortunately the phone rang as I watched this taking place and had to leave - when I returned to have a look approx 30mins later the water surface had rippled up... it was smooth as glass.. beautiful.
In the 6 years I've been here I've never seen this insomuch that the smooth area of sea was huge and visually spanned right across back towards tokerau beach and open waters of the pacific.

Re: Large area of warm water in middle south pacific
normally just wind closer to land (land generated breeze) effect
i.e the glassy effect out to sea would have been due to no wind over that water, compared to the body of water in the bay which was rippled slightly by wind (maybe moving down into the bay off the land (land breeze))
