Something which bugs me a bit about forecasts (esp TV ones)
"Lovely fine weather continuing over the South Island, except for cloud about the east coast with areas of drizzle" How many times have you heard that forecast. (could easily be the weather for the next few days) Well the vast majority of the South Island's population lives along the east coast (Dunedin, Oamaru, Timaru, Christchurch), so they miss out on the lovely fine weather and endure the cloud and drizzle, even though the forecasters still stress that most of the South Island (but only a minority of the island's population) will be getting the good stuff. Just thought I'd make this observation.

We hear about "all the fine weather" in the country and how wonderful its been when theres a west to southwest flow over the country and the weather here is unsettled but fine in WN etc and also about the "big anticyclone in the tasman" and the wonderful settled weather yet in reality its showery here then they go on telling us a low is in the tasman and the awful weather is here but then Auckland is in a NW airstream and its actually nice(even if 1 or 2 days) after a week of SW and a high in the Tasman

When I travel to Oamaru (or anywhere else on the coast for that matter) it's invariably like this:tich wrote:"Lovely fine weather continuing over the South Island, except for cloud about the east coast with areas of drizzle" How many times have you heard that forecast. 1. fine in Omarama
2. cloud to the east at Otematata
3. grey in Kurow
4. drizzle in Duntroon
5. rain in Oamaru.
Reverse of previous on return trip.
I love Omarama...

Of couse this also means that we are lumped in with their weather by forecasters, even though it's generally not even a close approximation.
