Not much Action Weather Here...

Unread post by Gary Roberts »

...just a little thunder and lightning, and moderate rainfall. Anybody elsewhere get anything exciting?

We copped a little bit of thunder and lightning overnight, but nothing too grand. Looking at that weather radar, most of it was just a toch north of us. Oh well. Maybe next time. At least we got some more snow, and there is more dark and ominous-looking cloud lurking off to the SW right now...

Pretty eventful day in Chch, though not quite as severe here as was predicted for Canterbury. It started fine, warm and calm, but the strong northwesterly then immediately sprung up. (I can't ever recall it going from calm to strong in literally a few seconds :o ) The cloud darkened from the south about 10AM, and then it rained - unusually solid rain for a norwester. :o Imagine what it would've been like in the high country. No thunder or hail here, but looking at that Noon radar, the area of North Canterbury in the purple could easily have got some. Then it gradually cleared up, but the airmass was obviously alot cooler, as it didn't feel like a norwester temperature wise. (fresh snow visible on the mountains)

I must add that the temperature obs for Chch Airport at 10AM show only 7C! :o A big drop from the 20 or 21C max earlier. I presume Chch's max was before the rain hit - couldn't have been more than the low teens afterwards.

You should be getting snow tonight Gary (snowfall warning for Lindis Pass - predicted as low as 300 metres), if you're not already getting it.

The South Westerly here rose on Monday night from no wind at all to a screaming gale in a short time ;)

The Chch Airport showed 19deg at 10am Wed according to the data from NOAA.
6 PM (22) May 04 66 (19) 42 (6) 29.38 (0995) NW 25 rain

It did cool down, although breeze was still from the NW, the temp was only about 14 for most of the afternoon.

I recall the change from fine and warm to rain and cool happened about 10AM or soon after in central Chch. Strange weather yesterday - normally you'd get a southerly change with that scenario.
