I remember it very well, I was in the 4th form. Something had gone wrong in some nuclear powerstation on the other side of the world...

Some very haunting images and words about the area 18 years after the accident.
On my OE I lived in the north of England, which had fallout from Chernobyl, I can remember seeing cattle with deformed udders etc.
Hopefully we will not see another Chernobyl in our lifetimes... sometimes I'm not so sure.

I teach courses around NZ on Radiation Safety for Civil engineers (it sounds wierd, but civil guys use nuclear devices to measure density of soil) and in the course we do a case study on Chernobyl.
It occured in April 1986 (I was about 10 years old) and i was living in the UK at the time and I remember it very well.
Reactor #4 exploded due to overlooked safety procedures, its classic Homer Simpson stuff. The explosion released 12 x 10^18 Bq of radiation which killed about 30 people directly, but harmed thousands.
Here are some pics.
The first shows aerial shot of the explosion site
The second two show the fallout plume up to 5 days after the incident. Note the hieght on the left hand scale

Ooooooooops!
They went in upside down.
But ya get the picture!!
Another interesting thing with chernobyl is that today there is concern over the effectiveness of the cap. The structure is subsiding and is conseqently allowing gamma radiation to leak out to the country side.
whos' keen for a holiday at the Chernobyl Camping Ground (apparently its real cheap!!!)
