Started off fine about Banks Peninsula and Chch this morning (just some cloud, both high and low), but it became dull and overcast from this afternoon. Still dry and no rain forecast until tomorrow, but I do recall instances in recent months when rain has come much earlier than predicted.
Looks like fine weather won't be returning here for some time - well not until after Friday. (end of current forecast period) And UNISYS has a strong cold southerly outbreak for early next week, mutating into a southeasterly storm for the North Island. But that's a long way into the future as far as forecasting goes.
SE perhaps lower NI but it always swings SW here
More like southwesterly thats all we mostly get here

Solid rain for a while earlier this morning, but just spitting stuff after that and dry for most of this afternoon. Could've been a warm front. I see there's a heavy rain watch for Central and South Canterbury for tomorrow night in a southeasterly flow - seems like the foothills will be in the main firing line. Chch gets a bit of shelter from Banks Peninsula in southeasterlies.

For the past couple of months people down here have been predicting a severe winter for the MacKenzie, and we've had snow occasionally up until the last week or so. Now that it's become warm again (and quite wet), the same people who were predicting record cold and snow are now proclaiming a three-day winter is all we're likely to enjoy this year! As for me, I wouldn't have a clue...

I wouldn't have a clue either, I'm just a hopeless ex-enginedriver/locomotive engineer/TransRailtrain-driver, whatever
Yeah, well I'm putting a bet down, it's going to be a fine day for Christchurch tomorrow except for a possibility of rain sometime in the day.
With regards to cloudiness, there should be a good possibility of it being fine and sunny above the cloud layer

That must have been one interesting job!

I'm not going to take that bet bcause, 1) I don't gamble and, 2) I can't afford to lose!

I commenced my NZR career as steam was finishing so only obtained a fireman's steam ticket.
I drove Dj's, Dg's (recabbed ones as well with the push button brakes)which I called "Hogs" long before Harley-Davidson owners called their machines the same name (which I reckon sound like noise-pollution anyway) Hate the things
Yes, Dx, Dxr, Dft's whatever.
My most memorable event was during the cold weather of 1996 when Ophir got the new maxumum low of minus21.
The coal trains from Ngakawau to Lyttelton were cancelled and I was assinged to run the TransAlpine Express which was the only train running over the Midland Line. Well icicles built up in the tunnels around the Staircase area, some were rather huge in the tunnels and it was spectacular crashing into them. As I had my video camera with me which I carried some times, I filmed the event for the TVNZ weather . Unfortunately, I have since lost the footage but some of the icicles in the tunnels were quite spectacular.

Now that I'd liked to see! Which tunnels are they? Is that the same route as the current Transalpine Scenic trip, or have they since changed it? I did that back in 2000, but can't recall any tunnels. If the same route, are they on the eastern or western side?

Yes the DG's rode pretty rough like the drewey Ds classes and they had some as DH at the time,I think for traction.I suppose you prefered the Eo's,if you drove in Otira.
Some of my railway books show spectacular scenes of Kb locomotives in snow in Avoca,Cass Bank etc

The DG's had AiA-AiA style of bogies which made them roll abit , as did the Da's, Dc type
The Ds shunters had rigid wheel frames, which nowdays the union wouldn't accept.
The 'Trams' at Otira were excellent riders.

There is only one rail route to the West coast.
There are 16 tunnels between Springfield and Arthur's Pass,on the east/Canterbury side with tunnel No 17 being the Otira Tunnel.
Driving through the Otira tunnel, I too did see some icicles on the odd occasion but nothing as spectacular as the tunnels around Staircase.

Looks like the end of fine weather for Christchurch, again
Back to those ugly cloudy days with nothing happening with the weather
Horrible weather forecast from tomorrow

I was in an Oamaru supermarket yesterday waiting for the wife and went to their library (magazine rack...) to pass the time. Had a quick skim thru the NatGeo article on storm chasers. Dang. Some folks get all the fun...
