Where was the Easterly?

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

Lovely overcast day here in Christchurch and now the rain is starting to settle in. Possibly some good totals coming in the next 24 hours or so for Canterbury/North Otago if this occluded front hangs in there :-k
I like to know where was the easterly forecast for today, when the wind direction from what I noticed today, to be mainly from the WSW or even westerly here, even though light?
No easterly in sight???

On the wmbas map you could see another low circulation just off Fiordland, perhaps the forecasters were wrong but thats where your W may have come from.We had a NE or a variation ENE today though

Light E quarter flow today below 1000m. Wind flow was so light that topography could easily distort the direction. But that easterly should firm up a bit overnight. Inland South Canterbury/North Otago should get the heaviest rainfalls through oregraphic enhancement. :)

I think the Canterbury foothills are defined as 'the Alps you can see from Chch', eg Mt Hutt. This is where the heavy rain is forecast, so probably no flooding in Chch, though wet nonetheless. Whether it eases up tomorrow afternoon we'll have to wait and see. Freezing levels still looks high - sorry, probably only liquid stuff for the skifields tomorrow.

Getting moist around here... Drizzle for most of the day but started heavier late afternoon.

Dunners is averaging about 10mm an hour, over the last few hours. Up to 55mm for the day, that's more than April's rainfall so far. We're not that used to prolonged rain like this.

Well there's been no more rain in central Chch since early this morning (not counting a trace of drizzle about 1/2 hour ago), but it's remained dull and overcast. The radar today showed some rain persisting about the outer edges of the peninsula, but the bright colours have stayed offshore.

National radio's traffic report this morning mentioned some surface flooding in Chch, but this was probably more a result of autumn leaves blocking the drains. (I didn't notice any extra large puddles on the way to work) Last night and yesterday afternoon's rain, while steady, didn't feel heavy, and the Avon wasn't up much this morning.

Hmmm...now that you've permitted Pharoah Banks to have his Pyramid-like Ego-Monument to the Ages, I don't think Aucklanders should be making fun of the road systems of anybody else! :-)

Drizzly this evening with low cloud. It seems like the flow is more southerly now, but the temperature has only dropped by about a degree. I notice on this afternoon's mountain forecast, that freezing levels are expected to drop in the South Island tomorrow, but still be above 2000 metres. Hardly a cold southerly, even though I think TV1 Weather used that word tonight.

You call the Mayor of Auckland Pharoah? Well the Pharoah was the ruler of hot, sunny Egypt. From what I've read of Michael's posts, the climate of Auckland is rather different to that of Egypt.

Actually that's probably a gross defamation of Pharoahs...Banks is more like some small regional Nazi or Communist party secretary...fill the pockets of yourself, cronies and relatives with plundered loot, all the while reaching stratospheric new heights of self-aggrandizement...oh, and he's a great friend of Paul Holmes...need I say more? :-)
