Unstable Trough

Unread post by NZstorm »

The unstable low moved onto northern areas overnight. Heavy showers here around midnight and again around 6am this morning with 22mm recorded. More heavy showers look to be on the way. Isolated thunderstorms possible. Currently cloudy in AK with 14C.

Too much cloud around today for good observing. Localised heavy showers developed during the afternoon. Heard just one rumble of thunder from cb to east.

This Cumulus buildup was quite inpressive and formed a cb with heavy shower. But with a higher layer of cirriform cloud blocking out the light, it did not come up well in the photo.

No good to us down here in Christchurch where we have had to put up with horrid weather over the last few days, well week actually  ...and MetService is saying that this grey/overcast drizzly/non-drizzly crap hanging around until monday now.
A lot of people have been asking me- "when is this weather going to end?"
I just say not likely as there is nothing much around to shift it :(
Good weather for suicides?? :-k

You've been looking at the severe weather outlook, but MetService's actual long-range forecast says fine weather for the South Island from Sunday, except for showers in coastal Malborough on Sunday. The current forecast for today and tomorrow sounds worse than what the weather has actually been like in Chch today - it was certainly drizzly early this morning, but otherwise it's just been cloudy in the central city. Still rather bleak, but not too bad. But watch out Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay.

i am sure glad we have been missing the rain here that the city has at the moment (from the front sprialing into the low center) ( i see grey lyn are up to 15mm for the day, and 134mm for may already ...
as its now wet enough under foot (mainly becuase there haas been no drying due to the lack of sun and or wind)

We got 40mm between 5pm last night and this morning - the low area of the lawn is flooded. May totals here are 132.5mm + 40mm from last night = 172.5mm. Wet!

There was 40.5mm here in Grey Lynn yesterday(24hrs).

There was some very unstable air around yesterday, pity we don't get more of those kind of troughs in summer. Problem with this time of year, there is not much forcing from day time heating.

Looks like winds remaining easterly quarter over NZ for another week!

A very brief drizzle shower this morning, otherwise just partly cloudy in Chch today - though today's radars show various little drizzle patches scattered throughout parts of Canterbury. Rather a chilly day, though the southerly hasn't been strong.
