What can be revealed on your pl8

Unread post by Tornado Tim »

From a legit email:
As of 1 November 2010, a new law comes into effect which allows third parties access to your name and address details via your vehicle registration plates.

You are able to elect not to have your personal details released however if you do not do this then anyone will be able to look up your rego plate and get the details from the net without paying anything.

Click on the link below to opt out (if you want to) - Free:

https://transact.nzta.govt.nz/transacti ... entry.aspx
This has been in the news previously and I have just opted out.

I can confirm it. Sadly there will be a period of something like 6 months before your opting out will be effective. So much for privacy laws :(

Let's get the facts right......."Currently, the names and addresses held on the Motor Vehicle Register are publicly available to any person who provides the registration plate number of the vehicle and pays the prescribed fee."
Been that way for years, why the sudden panic?

A useful site is carjam.co.nz. No address details, but free info on speedo readings, WoFs and registration.

Currently anyone can get your name and address via your plates by paying a small fee.
After the change only law enforcement agencies will be able to get that info - unless someone wants to try to get it through the official information act.
Other (non law enforcement) agencies may apply to also be able to get the information.
By opting out you will stop those 'other' agencies getting your info.

This is only how I see the new act, it is not an official interpretation.

I do see it as a big improvement on the current law (even if you don't opt out) - at present some toerag may see your car parked downtown and decide he wants it, by paying a small fee he can find where it is likely to be parked in the wee small hours.
