I noticed the two cb tops to NW around 5.30pm also. 1800hr radar puts them over 100km away. They just show up on the 1800hr IR imagery.
Unstable air will be knocking on the door of the far north this week with some heavy thundery falls possible over Northland/Coromandal ranges later in week. Showers may get into Auckland as well.
There is an area of showers and Thunderstorms in the Central Tasman Sea at the moment moving slowly East-North East.
Auckland Radar shows a line of developing showers East of Northland moving west.
Still cloudy down here.
Haven't seen the sun properly for about 2 weeks
Actually it's only been dull for about a week now. Last week was often drizzly and rainy, a big contrast to the warm, sunny weather of the previous week (bar the unusual northwesterly 'rainstorm' of the 5th). This week looks like something halfway between the previous 2 - often cloudy, but dry, with the ever present northeasterly.
One thing for sure is that it looks like the mild spell earlier in the month is well and truly over. In fact the next major change could be a cold southerly outbreak this coming Saturday. MetService has warned about this in today's severe weather outlook, though some models don't agree that such a change is likely. Anyway Saturday is still quite a long time in the future as far as forecasting goes.

The sun shone here most of the day today and lets hope that high in the north tasman and low don't move southwards together to give us those yucky winds
Yes another cloudy day here in ChCh with some drizzle this morning (I got 0.6mm) but the sun did very hard to try to make it's appearance
More cloud tomorrow

The light showers that periodically sprinkled Chch today weren't (initially) forecast by MetService, though they were probably the southernmost of the showers currently plaguing eastern areas. (I heard that Akaroa didn't get any today) The last shower was about an hour ago and there's still plenty of cloud about, so it's probably not over just yet.
Michael wrote:The maps shows it will change up here in the weekend with gales for us (rain in most other places) and a similar pattern into next week as now
Much better day in Chch today - the airflow must've tilted a bit more to the north, bring only scattered cloud and the most sunshine we've had for more than a week. Such small changes in wind direction can make a big difference to the weather here, with less of an onshore component to the flow.

We've been existing within a soup of low cloud down here, although it did clear briefly this afternoon. Not too cold though, showing 3.4 right now.
But once again the rain is getting into the far North. Spherics on the am band this morning, looks unstable from the top of Northland out into the North Tasman sea.
Midnight sounding has the 500hpa temp remaining below -20 which is a good sign of an unstable atmos for northern NZ.
There have been Thundery showers just North of Northland today.
A mostly sunny day in Auckland, light winds and currently 18c from a chilly, damp overnight low of 10c.

Yes it has been a good day with considerable high cloud Doesnt look good tomorrow with a SW airstream arriving tomorrow bringing gales. At least its been a good week as long as the SW dont go on
The ridge this week has done a very good job at holding back the showers over northern NZ. Looks like saturday will be the wet day with unstable conditions.
tomorrow with a SW airstream arriving tomorrow bringing gales
Shouldn't get a southwester as the low will pass over us Saturday with a clearing southerly hard on its heals. Another extended period of fine weather on the way for next week.
Convective cloud out to the west of Auckland this evening about 5.30pm.
These cb tops are about 200km distant according to satellite pics.
It was a clear day in Ak with 18C.
