Messy weekend

Unread post by tich »

Looks like a messy unsettled weather situation for many parts of the country this weekend. Here in Chch we should see a return to the dull, often drizzly conditions that plagued us earlier in the week, :( but should be much worse further north, esp about Gisborne and northern Hawkes Bay on Sunday. However, it now looks like we won't be getting the cold outbreak we were originally supposed to get.

Today we had a combination of (what looked like) a developing northwest arch, combined with some virga. (a brief shower affected the central city midafternoon) Surface winds were fresh northeasterly - not surprisingly we missed out on the milder temperatures often asscoiated with north/northwesterly flows.

Pretty much describes the whole day here (and quite probably tomorrow too). :(

Now looks like a cold southerly (or southeasterly) surge of air sweeping north on Monday. MetService's short forecast suggests thunder (yes thunder) for the east of South Island, but I'll believe that when I see/hear it. Looks like a cold, not a polar outbreak, so snow showers should (at this stage) be confined to the high country.
