Definetely lower than 1200 metres - I'd say probably more likely about 700-800 metres, as it's about 6C and still raining in Chch this evening. The rain came earlier in the morning than predicted, but then ceased for a while soon after noon (though still overcast). But the it resumed midafternoon, and hasn't let up since.Looks like a cold wet day down there today. Freezing level at Invercargill was around 1200m on this mornings sounding, but no doubt it is a lot lower over Canterbury today.
I'm surprised

Raining since 9.00am this morning here, easing off this evening though.
Reports from the Mt Hutt website is that they have recieved 15 cm of snow up until 3.00pm and still snowing.
Six degrees all day here so would have been too warm to be snowing in Methven,my estimate would be around the 600-700 metre mark.

Today the drizzle was possibly the most exciting day of drizzle we've here in Canterbury with this recent bout of this awesome, captivating weather phenomenon.
Canterbury Drizzle Chasers would of had a field day
The main highlight being the drizzle turning to snow over 400meters according to MetService
- "Snowdrizzle"
However I haven't heard of any Snowdrizzle snowreports. Nothing for the Porters Pass
There was something on TV about Methven.
Probably more in tomorrow's PRESS
Any, still drizzling at the moment but easing.
8.3mm of drizzle recorded since 7:30am this morning
I'm off to bed shortly as a Happy Nan !

Yeah. Well it's goodbye to the drizzle from early this morningspwill wrote:Looks like an extended period of foehn winds coming up for Canterbury so it will be goodbye to the drizzel.

Yes, it looks like a bit of a westerly scenario coming up next week.

Lightning in the Alps

Unfortunately, not very wintry for the first week of winter

Disturbed westerlies (usually) means wintry in Fiordland and Invercargill, but not eastern areas. This weekend looks like a wintry spell, especially in the far south. The most recent outlooks for the winter period (Blue Skies, NIWA) suggest that real wintry stuff will soon make its mark on NZ, with the warmth of this May being an anomally.Unfortunately, not very wintry for the first week of winter

The models suggests a persistent high in the Australian bight which is often a precursor to wintry weather for NZ.(Blue Skies, NIWA) suggest that real wintry stuff will soon make its mark on NZ, with the warmth of this May being an anomally
The trough due end of this week will be active with heavy rain/thunder likely in the west and north.
