The lift will be there today Tim by way of low level convergence. A convergence zone will develop down the centre of the Island. The main driver for todays instability is the hot afternoon temperatures coupled with modest moisture. Looking like CAPE values of 500j/kg won't be out of the question but it doesn't look like a storm chase set up. Will be watching all the same.

I know, MetService has an odd way of sending those temps through to us they include centres not on the daily list. Have asked about it but had no luck in finding out why!

Overcast here so not much chance of any cloud build ups here this afternoon unless this cloud clears in the next hour. Currently sitting on 20 degrees with a current dew point of 16.

Summery here too, hit 25.1C before but don't think we'll reach 26C due to sea breezes. Only gusting about 13km/h but its enough to keep the temp down!

A lovely day here in Auckland, clear skies, 26C, dewpoint 15C, no sea breeze at my house yet.

I see there are inland showers developing now over the NorthIsland high country, South Island is looking much more stable today.

Is it true that Auckland's Airport power outage was because of lightning?
Was it that "Thundery" up there yesterday?

I think some jurno may have their wires crossed, so to speak. :B Lightning strikes have caused previous runway-light outages. A factor in last night's outage may have been the residual effects of previous strikes.

Still 25C here at 6pm, only dropped 0.5C below the day's maximum. How odd?
Might have something to do with the change in wind direction ;)

They were theorizing the height of the hector anvil at 70,000 ft (23km) yesterday.

8-o wow, that was high.

Another hot one again coming up once the low cloud clears which it is already doing to the east of here, wonder if we get the third day in a row of 30+. :-k
Just a wee bit cooler over night on 13C than previous mornings.

When you consider USA gets those cloud tops (23km) and its at the same lattitudes as NZ it shows how crazy the instability is over there.

Just had a quick flick through the long range models and nothing stands out. The farmers will have to hang on for rain. I see CAPE 800j/kg modeled for Waitomo on Wednesday so maybe a decent storm down there Wednesday pm.
