Looks like an interesting impending westerly flow developing over NZ for the first week into the first week of winter.
What are one's thought's (as I thought I would start up a new thread??)
Yes, Steven, I think this may become the most interesting weather event for NZ since the February Floods. Wind may be the factor this time
Lets see what happens?
The lucky folks that live East gets the better weather We get all the crap as always

C-nimbus, the colours on the chart show an upper short wave trough over the western Tasman Sea. These can be favourable for thunderstorm development, more particularly in the summer months. But as the satellite imagery shows, lots of cb's in this area today(in behind front).
Chance of a heavy squally thunderstorm overnight friday/saturday right down the west of the country as this area of unstable air crosses NZ.

If it makes you feel any better Michael, those of us at present in the FAR East are sweating through the real hot-n-humid weather. Meanwhile, back home, it continues to snow...
Thanks for the report from Wanaka. Should be some cb in the ranges there tomorrow.
Rain has stopped in Auckland. 17mm recorded.
Slight chance of a thunderstorm overnight as that unstable line passes through. Will get heavy showers anyway, i think. Could be a resonable day tomorrow before another front at night.
Some outbreaks of rain (nothing significant) from about midafternoon here in Chch (raining again as I write), but looks like it should be fine by dawn.
Todays front was abit of a non event apart from an unexpected strong wind event around 2pm.
TV1 News showed footage of the nasty gales in Auckland today .
Always gets cold in Brisbane during the winter mornings especially if the wind is from the SW. We hassle the relations there as they always have a fire before we do!
Yesterday was pretty crook in the central city - the windows leaked in our offices which is the first time in 4 years I've seen it do that. Also had a couple of power cuts during the day at home with trees down on the lines etc.
Quite an active thunderstorm came through here at 5am, from the looks of the radar it was part of a large squall line. 10mm overnight.
Just looking at the large version of the radar image - offshore to the east is a cell with blue 50-60 dBz. Given the distance involved it could have been very impressive. Hopefully no tuna boats under it!
Latest satellite pic shows how the convective cloud has expanded overnight. But alot of it is spent anvil cloud. Currently overcast altostratus over Auckland.
We missed the early morning thunderstorm here in Auckland (heard just one rumble, 4mm). Perhaps the upper NW flow had something to do with that. We can be rain shadow here in central AK in showery NW'esters.
Lifted index -1 on 1200Z sounding.

My thoughts on todays weather is that if the temperatures lift a bit, currently 12C, but 15-16C, will yield a much higher level of convective energy with decent cb's possible.
In Queenstown. Light rain cleared today, now fine. A little new snow on the very high Mountain tops but Coronet Peak looks only good for grass skiing. Should be good snow fall here later this week to low levels .
