Big spotlight? - off topic

Unread post by Thunder »

Odd, when coming home I saw a what looked like a spotlight going across the sky, it was quite faint and at times moving right across the sky from left to right. Don't know why anyone would be needing a spotlight in Chch, it just sat there most of the time pointing in one direction. I then took some photos with my camera on bulb and it bought out the light more so it's visable, then I relised there looked to be two of them. It wasn't like it was sitting in one place then moved to another and sat there when I was taking this photo (see below), this would also produce a result that would make it look like there would be two lights in the pic but when I was taking this photo the beam didn't move.

Interesting??!!! :D Well I don't know what it was. The other light dotted across the sky is a plane

Aaron, I have seen these in Auckland plenty of times. Spotlights, not sure why people use them. I suppose its for the visual affect. :)

Nice spotting there Michael :D
Aaron, those beams look like the old searchlights that were used during WW2.
I notice that the photo is looking south towards Ferrymead from your place so that is where the searchlights could be coming from.
I remember in the 1960s at the "Industries Fair" that occured in the late winter months at the old Addington showgrounds, they used to have searchlights going like the ones in your photo. It was a trade mark attraction to where the fair was being held.
I think they had a similar thing in Auckland around that period as well. :?:

The stars are slightly (very slightly) blurred due to me maybe bumping the camera or the earth going around as it does.

It could've come from Ferrymead, it was from behind that part of the hill that comes down anyway, my first thoughts were it originated from central Chch or on the other side of Chch (the west side). Maybe they were trying to signal Batman, as I secretly rush to my underground liar ;).

Or it could've been someone doing it for the pure pleasure of seeing what reaction they could get out of me tonight! Yes, it must've been you John, as you thought to yourself "This'll get Aaron going!"
